This is such an empty-headed retread discussion that is always on standby to help those who get paid according to how well they can chase ratings.

The very definition of the term is indicative of popularity.

There can be no better indication of the popularity of the Dallas Cowboys than to look at how the networks covet the opportunity to broadcast a Cowboys game in prime time.

End of discussion, but not that there's not plenty more evidence than that... just that that's all the evidence needed.

If the ratings are an indication of popularity (which could be questioned) then we should know what reason this popularity has.

Because i think calling a team americas team means that this team has values that are shared by the majority of the US people.

Great info as usual from you Sir. I always learn a lot from reading what you post here. I wondered who coined it and when. How it came about. I always believed it was from Pat Summerall first saying it during one of the Cowboys games in the 70s he was calling.
I was born in 71, so by the time I became a fan they already were AMERICAS TEAM. Didn't matter to me then, nor does it now what AMERICA thought or who they rooted for - Cowboys were my team and thats all that mattered. I was a little kid running around in St Louis wearing Cowboys shirts, apparently I insisted on Cowboys t-shirts only back then, lol. I got so much crap from that because at the time the home team Cardinals were division rivals of the Cowboys and boy did the people in St Louis hate the 'Boys. With a passion. Ive always been the only Cowboys fan in any group Ive been in up here. Never a shortage of Cowboy haters up here though, lol.
I agree with you that there are definitely two versions or era's of Cowboy football.
Version one - Landry's Cowboys. Classy man. Innovative, genius head coach. Winning tradition.
Version two - Jerry's Cowboys. Classless hillbilly. Made one genius decision - hiring Jimmy. I guess we got lucky there too though that they knew each other before and as I understand it both played on a NCAA Championship team together at Arkansas in 60.
After the initial classless way Jerry took over and dumped Landry and that horrible first season, Jimmy's teams hid the true Jerry from us because nobody cared about him then. It was all about Jimmy and kicking butt on the field and having fun watching the 'Boys just roll. But Jerry's ego got bruised and he wanted the credit for it all, and we all got to see the real Jerry - and unfortunately have been stuck with him since.
The Cowboys aren't AMERICAS TEAM anymore, and Jerry is the guy who killed it. Period.
