Are we fundamentally sound?

I think this may be the root of our problem. Feel free to disagree...

But I think with all the hype and glammour this offseason that we began to dream too big too soon. We did not focus on fundamentals and we did not focus on the little things. As we all know, THAT is what wins football games.

All I know is watching this team this year we are not disciplined and we are sloppy. To me, this is a direct result of lacking fundamentals, which the foundation for that may have been laid in OTA's and training camps. We are hurting because of it.

You are applying the things done by fans to the team...

Is this a trick question? Because the evidence in the negative is pretty compelling...

Early in the season, the offense demonstrated that it was as good or better than any other in the league.

Late in the season, the defense proved the same on the opposite side of the line.

Special teams has been so-so much of the season, but in the kickoff return game with a healthy Felix Jones, it shined.

This team's biggest problem is that it has very, very rarely put all three phases of it's game together during one particular game AND if anyone points out one, I could argue that wasn't the case for all four quarters.

Excellent point...consistency has been our problem all year. If we could somehow start "clicking" we could be dominant. In ways the NFL has not seen in years...

one of the most fundamentally unsound teams in the NFL. just shows how talented this team really is when you can play sloppy football on both sides of the ball all year long and still be in control of getting into the playoffs. this lays on the players but even more on the coaching staff imho.

We are not sound. Individual talent we have lot's of. However, I have never seen a team with this much talent play undisciplined as we do. Just re-watch the Ravens game and you'll see what I mean. Our offensive line is horrible and we were lucky Romo was able to complete the passes that he did. Too many penalties and lack of execution is a direct reflection of this pathetic coaching staff. Wade continues to make excuses as to how close we were to winning when he should concentrate on why it was close to begin with. EXECUTION. It is no wonder Wade can't keep a coaching job.

No, but I don't think any team in the NFL is otherwise nobody would win, nobody would lose and, much to Donovan McNabb's shock, everybody would be tied for 1st :)

joking aside, I think there are some basics that some guys just can't seem to get through their heads:

DLine/LBs: Sometimes it's ok to not be the hero and instead make sure you stick to your assignment and funnel a guy into somebody else's tackle.

Oline: Protect, protect, protect.

Flo: don't jump early! False Starts:Flo as Free Throws:Shaq

Ware: don't jump early or line up off-sides/in the neutral zone, you're good, that extra inch won't matter that much!!

Romo: just because you're a QB doesn't mean you have to throw the ball down field when it's not a run play. It's ok to go down w/ it or better, chuck it 10 rows up into the crowd.

Owens: Romo's not McNabb, he doesn't improvise like that, just run your routes out.

Gurode: Cool it w/ the high snaps...seriously

Folk: Would a kickoff into the endzone be too much to ask for this Christmas?

Paulescu: ...at least you haven't had a punt blocked.

We ARE, however,"fundamentally sound" with regard to talent and people under contract to put together a "Colt"-like or "Patriot-like" run (that should have really started last year.) With the exception of coaching, and Romo maturing and being "Holmgrenized" by someone, this team has the personnel to put together a good 4-6 year run at it.
I never did, still don't, and never will be on board the Phillips/Garrett wagon. I wasn't on board at all when Parcells quit, and I wanted Ron Rivera in the worst way. I was VERY, VERY disappointed with the hiring of Phillips.
Even if (when) we beat Philly, unless some miracle occured this week in practice, this team do something to beat itself in the playoffs. Probably sooner rather than later. Another stupid off-sides, a blown coverage, a holding call 20 yards away from the play, another Romo "adventure", whatever.
The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, until otherwise proven wrong. All we have to go on is the end of last year's debacle, and the first 15 games so far this year. And there's little to believe that the above stated assessment will not be proven true.

What we need is a BP type of coach who is not burned out and has the energy and fire to kick butt and take names- AND who has Jerruh's full support and promise not to interfere.

Talk about wishing for the moon.

What is sad is that in B P's first year he still had the fire and he did such a great job of coaching that mostly sad sack team. Imagine what he could have done last year with the healthy and talented team we had then; or even this year with the more talented but injured team.

I hope there is a coach out there for us like that- but I doubt if we get him Jerruh would give up the power necessary for him to discipline this team like it needs to be. Cowher might be the only one with a big enough rep to do that; but I am far from sure he is good enough.

when you think of fundamentally sound two words come to mind:

gurode
adams

i've never seen a more fundamentally sound duo than that tandem there.

~sarcasm off~
