Are we OK at the TE position?

A reminder on numbers for the TE position, Jarwin had 20 catches in the last four games after 7 catches in the first 12 games. Schultz had 4 in the last four games after 3 catches in the first twelve. If you repeat the numbers for the last four games for the 16 games of the 2019 season it means 96 catches from those two.

Some of that was because Jarwin and Schultz were taking advantage of defenses that had come to ignore the TEs. Some of that factor is on Linehan and some of it was on the lack of development from Jarwin and Schultz. But 24 catches in four games is still significant.

Its possible we add a salary cap casualty at TE but I think the most likely scenario is we draft a TE in the 2nd or 3rd. Then we go with Jarwin, Schultz and Rico until the rookie can contribute, similar to what Gallup did this year.

Its entirely possible we are OK rolling with Jarwin and Schultz, plus you have the enormous wildcard of Rico Gathers that might be cut, but could break out.

If a player that Mclay really likes in round 2 or 3, then by all means pull the trigger.

Its a really deep draft for TE with something like 8 juniors declaring. We could get a very good project to develop in the 3rd or 4th round.

Edit - I just searched for it and thirteen (13) underclassmen Tight Ends declared early for this draft.

I think our TE coach should have a lot of say, i admit he did really well with our TE corp

If Hockenson, Fant, or Irv Smith are within reach, yes.

Dax Raymond might be an option in the middle rounds.

Also, if everyone is so high on Doug Nussmeier...why didn't he do a better job of developing Gathers?

The problem I see at TE was a little like the thread title- we were just ok at TE. I like what I saw from Jarwin and Stultz as developmental players and Swaim is steady if not spectacular. The legend of Rico Gathers has surely waned after watching his spare performances all year.

Like you, I would like to see us draft another TE.

TJ Hockenson out of Chariton, Iowa....My hometown...Ya I'm being a total homer with this guy but he's a beast. He's a complete Tight End that this team needs. I actually like Jarwin but Hockenson is definitely a player they should be looking at
They can look but they can't touch. He is long gone by Dallas' pick.

I think the Rico experiment is over.

Could be, but I think we find out in training camp next year. He could surprise, but I think the most likely scenario is that a draft pick beats him for his roster spot. He has elite physical skills though, that has obviously given him third and fourth chances.
