Are we sleeping on Tyler Patmon?

We just saw the rookie mini-camp go by a few weeks ago. Verdict: Byron Jones smothers receivers, Randy Gregory needs a sandwich, and Chaz Green is a bust. Of course it's too early to tell whether any of those things are true or not.

But in 2014, during this same rookie mini-camp, Monte Kiffin compared Tyler Patmon to Ronde Barber. Lay off the meds, right?

“I see this guy No. 20, this defensive back, I don’t even know the guy,” Kiffin said. “I want to see him out there. He reminds me of Ronde Barber. I don’t know that he’s Ronde Barber now. It’s exciting.”

Then the pre-season came, and we saw some top notch play recognition and instincts. Very dare I say, Ronde Barber like.

The quarterbacks he made plays against weren't 3rd string scrubs either. He broke up a pass thrown by Joe Flacco that was intended for Steve Smith. He had two INT's and a forced fumble in ONE game, against starter Ryan Tannehill and back-up Matt Moore.

He played limited snaps in the regular season, but again he flashed that playmaking ability by taking a Carson Palmer pass to the crib.

You can even see the play recognition skills on display in his college highlights. It's who he is.

I want to see Patmon take on a bigger role in 2015, because with the improved pass rush, he's the type of playmaking corner this team hasn't had in a long, long time.

I think Patmon's development is what made them feel comfortable letting Sterling Moore walk. Now, Moore was no all-star by any stretch but he was solid enough for the most part (the Green Bay game notwithstanding). The kid has some good instincts but what I think the Cowboys like about the kid is his film study. What makes me say that is the play he made against Miami in the pre-season last year. That pick six was about instinct and film study.

Let's hope his development continues to trend upward. He certainly seems to have the physical skills. I also think his playing style lends itself more to a zone type of scheme which relies more on smarts and instincts whereas a man scheme relies more on physical superiority. I'm intrigued about White, also. I don't have pie in the sky hopes about him but I like that the kid will stick his head in there and make a tackle. That's huge in Rod's system from the CB position.

He makes plays he just needs more reps to fully develop. I like his upside..

I am excited to see how much Patmon has progressed. His scrappiness reminds me of Scandrick and would not be surprised in a couple of years he becomes a really good slot CB.

Love some Patmon! Hoping to see more of him (and not because of injuries)

I think he could have a bright future too, but let's give him time. Only played 74 snaps as a rookie, Brandon Carr by comparison had multiple games with more snaps than that.

Earlier this year on Talkin' Cowboys it was mentioned that if he ever wants to be more than a slot player that he needed to get a lot stronger.

I don't want to see him forced into a bigger role than he is ready to handle this season. He has not really played many snaps.

His other issue is that he is really small (5-10, 179 when drafted). He projects best as a slot CB, but Scandrick normally moves the the slot with someone else replacing him on the outside in the Nickel.

I would prefer a Nickel lineup of Scandrick, Jones and Carr; however, I don't know if Carr is going to stay. He is really expensive and Jones could replace him as a starter.

If Carr is gone, then the 3rd CB would be between Patmon and Corey White (5'11-1/2", 206). White has better size to play on the outside and has played quite a few snaps in the NFL.

I'm not counting on anything from Claiborne. He was already having problems before his injury. Now he has to come back after a major injury and do something he could do when healthy, which is prove to be a consistent quality NFL CB.

He's thought of where he should be thought of. He can tackle and showed signs of understanding route concepts and playing zone. He's also got legit speed (Moore was a nice player, but slow). But, the jury is still way out on this kid.

He's a borderline roster player. Not sue how one can sleep on someone like that.
