Are we smart enough?

Are our defensive players smart enough to run Rob Ryan's defense to perfection? The reason I ask is because I got into a heated conversation with an Eagles fan. He said that the Cowboys' defensive players lacked football intelligence. I read comments that the players went to Wade last year to ask him to dumb it down. Don't know if that's true.

The bottom line is we made a tremendous amount of mental mistakes last year. Wade's defense was considered simple (by Rob's standard). I am beginning to wonder if we actually have the football intelligence to grasp this defense. I am NOT basing it on the first preseason game.

Don't get me wrong, I rooting for my team 100%, but I don't wear silver and blue glasses.

There is no such thing as football perfection, so the answer is no.

Of course not, I agree, totally. But that is what we all thrive for. I spent 22 years in the military, just retired a few months ago. I know from experience that you have to set a goal for people higher than what they think they can achieve. Good enough is not good enough.

I would perhaps agree with you but we've seen regimes and players come and go, and yet the mistakes are still there.

I've asked myself what the source might be plenty of times, but I'll be darned if I can figure it out.

Under Parcells we made plenty of mental errors and that's continued through Wade. We'll see if Garrett has any better luck.

Well, Parcells said you can't coach penalties. I totally disagree. I think penalties are derived from lack of concentration, lack of confidence in your ability and your assignment. Most of all, lack of discipline.

Ugh I used to hate that with Wade. No matter what happened he'd sit on the sideline looking confused.

I think the one question I would have is whether the teachers were preparing the students properly?

I suspect that under Garrett's regime that more attention will be paid to character, attitude and football intelligence and less attention will be paid to freakish athleticism relatively speaking. This should bode well for offensive and defensive execution.

Getting into a heated conversation with an E-Gals fan is futile. :stop:

They will beat you down with their extreme stupidity. :insane:

Most Eagle fans lack Football Intelligence, I know I live right here.

My Dad used to sat if you argue with a fool then people can't tell you apart.. Like a facal fan has any football IQ...not

I totally agree with you.

Parcells got his players to perform with psychological manipulation.

Wade was more about, "here's the main idea, go work on your own." That's great for players with self-motivation, but not so great for players that don't quite have that drive.

I get the impression that Garrett is more of a teacher. Hopefully this is Rob Ryan too. Garrett doesn't let small details go by. I've watched parts of many of week 1's games because I got NFL.com's preseason pass and I've seen pretty much every team fumble the ball twice in each game. How many times did the Cowboys fumble? I don't recall one. It's been written that the Cowboys work on stripping the ball every practice. Well, they try to strip the ball from an offensive player. That attention to detail and repetition should help make the players instinctive.

Yes sir!

Last year, I stooped a little low, and told an Eagles fan to "kiss the rings". I hate that I resorted to the Superbowl comment. His response was "it's not a race, it's a marathon."

Uh, ok?

When an Eagles fan talks about how someone else has no intelligence, I want you to point out to him the irony.

Bradie actually is a pretty good blitzing ILB. He lead the league in sacks for a middle linebacker a couple years ago. Why Wade stopped using him to blitz and Brooking instead, I don't know.

The guys are intelligent enough to run the defense. Coaches have to be smart enough to teach their schemes and give the players the proper work both on the field and in the class room to have the complete understanding of what they are doing.

If we're not smart enough then how do we know that we're not smart enough? :D

But seriously: Yes, our guys on D are smart. Garrett talks about keeping the right kind of guys, and football smarts is part of that. I have no issue with the football IQ of this team; it's there.
