Are You ready for some football??????????????????
We are a week away from the kickoff of the 2007 Season. Here are the soryline’s I’m watching carefully and a few takes.
Tony Romo – all eyes are going to be on him in Texas and the national stage. He is charismatic and likeable. His moxy is his strength and a potential liability if not kept in check. I truly am not 100% sure which way he is going to go in 2007. I think we will see extremes with Tony’s performance. I always liked the player but it’s time to put up. Redball needs to keep him getting the ball out fast on right reads. His quick release and is very accurate when in that mode. If I was in Vegas, my money is on Tony Romo taking this job and getting it done. He just has ‘it’.
MB3 versus JJ – We know what we have in JJ. He is an adequate NFL running back. Makes a few spectacular runs but is prone to a bunch of no gain and short yard carries. MB3 is a bigger, more powerfull back. He has much better ability to read the defense on the fly and get to space. That’s why he is so damaging in the redzone. He can make 4 yards out of nothing. 16 Td’s is an indicator the kid could be a Dominant Running back if used full time. Plus JJ might be a good fresh back in 2nd half after MB3 has pounded Defense.
Bobby Carpenter – Kid can’t cut it at ILB and by trade is a pass rushing specialist. But he’s behind Ware, Ellis, Spencer on that depth chart. What concerns me most is he is not very physical and is slow to read plays. He plays slow and was real bad last year on coverage and Special teams. Carpenter has been a huge disappointment for a #18 pick. It’s season 2 and still time to kick it up a gear but my expectations are low.
Kevin Burnett – He is exactly what Phillips covets at ILB. He is a great athlete and fast. He can pass rush and also cover. He flies around out there and don’t sell him short because he is only 228, he hits a ton. Will be starting by mid year over Ayodele. And damn to Ayodele wearing #51. Scares the bejesus out of me everytime I see a #51 on the field.
Wade Phillips – Can he elevate this defense? Can he get Ware to 15-20 sacks? Can he get production out of the bookends in Canty and Spears? Will the Hamlin experience and leadership keep the secondary in order? Will Roy FINALLY be used more in box? I personally LOVED the Phillips hiring. He is and X&O guy most suited to taking over this team and defense post Parcells.
TO – Is it me or is he maturing? He looks happy, comfortable with this team. He didn’t react well to Parcells and Bledsoe hard love styles (more in his face old school or ignore) Romo and Phillips appear so far to have TO figured out. Throw him the damn ball and give him some love as a person. I expect a 1500 yard 15 TD season from TO.
Newman – CB situation may not be as dire as some think it is. Glenn, Reeves, Parakeete Jones, Thomas can play in the NFL. And let’s face it, our defense was abused last winter with Tnew on the field. The front 7 Applying more pressure will minimize Newmans loss. I don’t see us being able to get a marquee older established corner this late in the game. Maybe a trade like what the Saints did last year picking up The Shanle for a 6th and plugging him in at starter. There might be a few corners we can add next week for a late day 2 pick.
PK Battle – I’m pulling for the draft pick. Grammy is an aging veteran and you can always get guys like that if we experience turbulence. I’d cut Grammy.
NFC East – I think we will be in hunt and need to win division and get that home game. Even better is to get a top 2 seed. Last thing we want to do is have to travel to Seattle, Chicago, Philly in January.
Team weakness – We are real thin at NT, Center. I’d like to see Anthony Bryant from Baltimore picked up in next week as a NT load to rotate with Fergie. I have to give Gurode props for elevating his performance last year but watch shot gun and run blocking, not always the best. Our tackles have underperformed and forced Romo on too many occasions for my liking to improvise. They need to step it up and keep Romo clean. Tony is not a big QB that can take a 16 game pounding – JMO. And Romo was sacked and fumbled a lot down stretch as teams altered game plans on him. Oline is always our demise.
Concerns – how will Terry Glenn perform without Parcells around? I’m quietly concerned about him with injury and life without Parcells. He’s a really different cat and I hope Phillips can hit the right buttons with him.
Our best player on team may be our punter. He is dominant and maybe the best I’ve seen since Ray Guy.
NFL Buzz – a few undercourants I’m hearing. Randy Moss may be on thin ice at Foxboro. He received no signing bonus and if he doesn’t see practice field soon may get cut. Zak Deossie LB with Giants had a big camp and may be a big surprise this season. He’s playing on TV tonight and I’ll be scouting Giants. Next Matt Schaub in the NFL? Watch the Name Dan Orlovski in Detroit. Jets might make it deep into playoffs, build on last season. San Fran my sleeper in NFC.
Draft talk – Let’s get this going this fall! Two #1 draft picks! That’s insane, I’ll be canvassing the nation looking for sleepers, gems, busts, studs. Let’s get the draft board buzzing. First mission – who is that corner in a small Texas school running 4.32? Can he play?
I’ve been away on an extended vacation traveling the world but have returned to the Zone to talk some Dallas Cowboys football. I want to say evening to a lot of the old time posters here.

Giants moved the ball well first drive tonight, but it was their 1st stringers versus Pats backups.
