Dallas Cowboys Romp to No. 1 in Hispanic TV Ratings

September 26, 2007

More Hispanic households tuned in to watch the Dallas Cowboys' NFL victory Sunday night than any other English-language program, according to figures released by the Nielsen Media Group for the week of Sept. 17-23.

The Cowboys ran away with a 34-10 victory over the Chicago Bears and earned a chart-topping 8.3 mark for NBC in the Hispanic TV ratings for English-language programs. The two pre-game segments on NBC also produced top-five showings for the network. The pre-kickoff show was second with a 6.0 rating and "Football Night in America," the program that shows highlights from Sunday's earlier games, was fifth with a 4.4.

The season premiere of Fox's "Family Guy" drew a 5.4 rating, which was good enough for third place, and World Wrestling Entertainment's "Friday Night Smackdown" produced a fourth-placing showing for the CW network with a 5.2.

"Destilando Amor" a nighly telenovela from Univision, claimed No. 1 in the Hispanic TV ratings for Spanish-language programs for the ninth week in a row with a five-night average rating of 25.7. The show's Tuesday night broadcast reached more than 3.3 million Hispanic households for a 27.2 rating, topping other individual programs for the week.

The Latin Grammy's nomination show, which was featured on Univision, was second place with a 23.2 rating and "Don Francisco Presenta," another weekly Univision program, claimed third with a 19.8 mark.

Nielsen's figures, however, have their detractors. One group has started a petition, hoping Nielsen Media Group will change the way it samples the U.S. Hispanic population in its English and Spanish TV ratings. The Help Change TV group, which has a petition at www.HelpChangeTV.com, claims that Nielsen does not include enough U.S.-born Hispanics in its audience sample, leading to the impression that a vast majority of Hispanics watch Spanish-language TV.

The following lists are TV ratings based on Hispanic viewership. Nielsen's ratings include viewers who watched the program while it aired and others who viewed the shows via digital video recorder within 24 hours of their airing. The group says that the Hispanic TV audience represents more than 11.63 million television households in the United States. The rating is equivalent to the percentage of households or persons watching a TV program during the average minute.

I know you're being a little facetious, but what's surprising? The fact that Hispanics watched the Cowboys more than any other non-Spanish broadcast or that there is a story about it?
