Five minutes with . . . Al Johnson
by Kent Somers - Apr. 14, 2008 03:30 PM
The Arizona Republic
Al Johnson will enter his second season with the Cardinals after signing as a free agent before last season.
Question: Is it true you are buying a radio station near your hometown of Brussels, Wis.?
Answer: "I've been interested in buying a radio station for a while. It just happened to come about this year. In December we started talks and we came to an agreement. Now, we're waiting for the FCC approval. It's about 10 miles north of my hometown . . . Sturgeon Bay."
Q: How did you become interested in radio?
A: "When I got to Texas (playing for the Cowboys), I met a few guys who owned radio stations in Oklahoma. My other friend who is working with me on this station in Sturgeon Bay took me to the CRS (Country Radio Seminar), the country radio thing in Nashville every year. I got to meet a lot of the country stars and a lot of people who own radio (stations)."
Q: What do you like about it?
A: "As a football player, doing radio seems like such a better retirement job. You don't have to worry about buying $2,000 suits. You can show up in shorts and a T-shirt. You can have the greatest radio show in the world, and nobody knows if you're naked or what you are. You could be sitting there in your boxers on your front lawn. Nobody knows."
Q: Are you going to be on the air?
A: "I don't know if I'd have my own show, but I might. If right now, I could pick retirement job, it would be to have a radio show. I don't know if I would want to be the host, but maybe like a co-host or something."
Q: So is it going to be a country format?
A: "We haven't decided what we're actually going to do. Well, we have but we can't tell you. We don't want the competition to know until we get approval by the FCC, which should be sometime around the first (of May.)"
Q: So is your partner going to run things?
A: "Yeah, my partner and my mother. My mom will oversee everything. She's an accountant and she'll be doing the books. It's one of those things where I'm not in it to make a fortune, I just hope not to lose money. I hoping that some day it will be something I can use in retirement. The most important thing is to not let it take away from football. It didn't cost enough that if it goes belly up, I'm going to be crying that river."
