“And with the 18th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys trade their pick to…” It’s likely merely imagining Commissioner Roger Goodell utter those words invokes a compulsive gag reflex to which all Cowboy fans are far too accustomed. “What is Jerry Jones doing?” we ask. “He pulls this every year!” we proclaim. Well, I’m here to tell you – Get ready for it.
The top needs on the Dallas Cowboys are Offensive Line, Safety, and Defensive Line (in that order). All three of those groups are fairly deep in the top 100 players of this year’s draft. If the Cowboys play their cards right they could get 3 starters out of this year’s crop. So if the draft is so deep, why would they trade back?....

These is a deep draft for OL and S so I don't mind trading back some. Not too excited about dropping out of the first round but if we got a high two and say a third or a 1 next year then I'd think about it.

Probably in 07, when they traded their pick to the Browns for the rights to draft Brady Quinn for a 2008 first rounder and a 3rd in 07 I believe? Then proceeded to move back into the first round and drafted Anthony Spencer.

You could make a fair argument that the Julius Jones trade. The following year we had 2 first round picks, Parcells wanted Spears, they talked him into going with D.Ware first, and spears second. You could make a fair argument, had we not done that trade down we end up with Jackson/Spears. Jackson has been a good rb, but not a HOF. Ware on the other hand..

I agree, the guy who has been on a 1yr contract for 3yrs(including this one), whose stats seemed to get better every year.

I'll somewhat give you that.

Of course, that is purely speculation. We have heard Parcells wanted Spears over Ware. That much is a fact. But had they only had 1 first round pick, there is no way of really knowing who they would have taken at 11. So even that one is somewhat of a stretch.

Trade back, pick up an extra first - package both firsts and next years 1st to move up and get Clowney.

Clowney opposite Ware would be amazing.

You can find quality safeties and guards deep into the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year.

I always laugh when I see "if the Cowboys play their card right, they can get 3 starters". When was the last time, we had a draft and started 3 rookies from that draft class. Not in the past few years.

Our 3rd rounder from last year didn't start until everyone got hurt and is not projected to start this year.

We will be lucky to have 2 players start from this draft, no matter how many picks or where they pick.

Cowboys do not like to start rookies.

I always laugh when someone misinterprets "three starters" as "three day one starters."

That would be an awesome tandem.

Of course, no way to guarantee that you get a certain player even this year, let alone a year from now. In fact, odds would be against it.

True, draft is not all about day 1 starters, some of these guys will take time. Always difficult to project how quickly a player will get up to speed. 1st rd pick you clearly you would like him starting at the beginning of the season if at all possible

No doubt.

Some need to dial it back on expectations of non-1st round players.

I know there's a chart somewhere that shows how long the average player stays in the league at each draft slot and how many ever start.

The said on NFL Path top the Draft last night that only 40% of third rounders even are in the league after jsut a few years, let alone ever start.

This does look to be a good draft to find several early contributors. But nothing's a given.

True, this is a big step. High school to college not many Freshmen play and going to the Pros an even bigger leap not many rookies will start.
