Though I know that Rogers & Williams have had less than seamless introductions to the NFL as high 1st round picks it still shocks me to see the above in print.

How can one team end up with 2 WR's that end so grossly underachieving?

Shocking!

How?

By being the Detroit Lions

and/or

Having Matt Millen as your general manager.

First, WRs should never be taken early in round one. Highest bust rate of any position by far. Look at the 10 best WRs in the NFL right now and see where they were drafted.

Secondly, these two particular WRs had trouble written all over them before they were drafted. Williams' work ethic has always been in question so this should come as no surprise. One only had to look at some of the people Rogers surrounded himself with during his last years at Michigan State to see that drugs were an issue.

The tardiness is inexcusable, but the Lions should have known that he was going to have huge weight issues. When a kid is 227 at 21 years old after spending a year and a half preparing for his Combine workout, its not shocking that he ballooned up once the real football started and the body was getting more rest. The sooner they convert him to TE, the better his chances of making it in the NFL.

And he's a horrible fit for Mike Martz's offense.
