Will McCarthy's tenure in Dallas be determined by whether or not Dak succeeds as a long-term franchise QB?

Inevitably to some degree. The quarterback is the most important position in sports, so success there is certainly tied into team (and coach) success.

But I think that more importantly, the performance of the defense will better determine McCarthy's success or failure. I say that because I have much more faith in the talent and coaching on the offensive side than on defense right now.

Spell check got you.

Cheaper to fire a coach than a QB recently signed to a huge, 30m+aav deal.

I'm going to go against the grain and say not necessarily.

I don't think McCarthy takes the job if he actually believes Dak is OMG WORST QB EVER BAD AT EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do think he tries to develop Dak as much as he can and that he expects to have a good 2020 season with Dak at QB.

However, McCarthy isn't personally invested in him, and if Dak backslides McCarthy is going to move on.

Even if this happens 1-2 years after Dak is re-signed to a hypothetical big contract this isn't the end of the world. The Patriots signed Drew Beldsoe to a $103m deal in 2001 salary cap money (!!!), then turned around and replaced him with Tom Brady the same year and never looked back.

I guess the question is if Dak proves to be Kirk Cousins, rather than Aaron Rodgers, does Jerry let MM try again with a QB of his choosing or is that it for him? A lot will depend on what they decide to do with Dak's contract this off season, but another sign might be whoever MM brings in as the second QB this offseason. It probably won't be Cooper Rush.

I am hopeful that McCarthy has recognized Dak is not a system QB and he will taylor the offense accordingly to exploit his strengths.

No.
If McCarthy sees that Dak can't get the job done he will send him packing.
It wouldn't be hard to show from the game films enough to justify the cut.
It really comes down to whether or not McCarthy believes that he can fix Dak.
No one can deny that Dak has all of the physical abilities of a great quarterback.
It's the mental part that needs work.
The damage the Cowboys would sustain from the big contract in the salary cap, however, could cripple the team for years to come if McCarthy bets on Dak and is wrong.

Every HC is tied to the success of their QB.
That’s the way the league is and there are more HC’s than elite QB’s so many fail because of a lack of talent at QB

No. Dak will be franchise tagged, rather he likes it or not. If he holds out (which would be dumb because he has no leverage), he will be kicked to the curb due to the disrespect he showed in the act of sitting out. We will draft another QB,

However, if he plays under the tag, if he improves and looks like the QB he looked like in the Vikes and Lions game CONSISTENTLY, he will get the money he is seeking and McCarthy and Jerry will come to an agreement to keep him. However, if Dak fails to step up to the plate for the 5th year in a row, he will be walking at the end of the season and I can see us trading up for Trevor Lawerence or Justin Fields (if they declare).

Dak has all of the leverage. Quarterbacks, in general, have a ton. It's why their contracts have exploded.

If Dak plays on the tag and plays well, he's goign to get $40m. Hes' not going to play poorly enough to ever get less than $30, especially after next season, no matter what fans want to make up about him.

Yes and no. There are lots of HCs who don't put their QB in a position to succeed. We've watched that happen for a decade in Dallas.

QB talent matters, but it's obvious whether or not a coach creates an environment where a QB even has a chance.

Dak doesn't play well enough to have leverage. Take a QB like Mahomes, Watson, Jackson. THEY have leverage. Dak? The 15th-16th best starting QB in the league asking for 35+mil is beyond stupid. I get it's "market" price, but some things aren't worth "market" price.

Also, we all thought he'd take a step up this year, and he did, but he decided to take a step back in the Pats game and every game after that. You saying "he's not going to play poorly enough to get less than 30 mil" is funny to me because all the Dak supporters said that last year before the 2019 season started, and look where we are. Still undecided on his inconsistent play. Nobody is making up anything about him, we are stating REAL FACTS and not falling for his garbage stats. Any real analyst would agree with that. Even Aikman spoke about his garbage time stats after the Bears game.

Nah not this time!
Mike will escape from the Dak execution chair as he's a newbie and 2020 will be the last season for Dak's 15 min of fame....

Except McCarthy didn't pick Dak. Right now, there is no viable alternative, however. How much input will McCarthy have in what to do with Dak this off-season? They can either franchise him and McCarthy will get one season to decide if Dak is a viable franchise QB, or they will extend him, but that would seem like a Jerry/Stephen move. Could McCarthy be held responsible for it?
