Jerry is LOYAL TO A FAULT....and it shows up time and time and time again. And Jerry succumbs to HYPE way too much. That is BAD when you are a GM. The HYPE his players gets clouds his ability to properly evaluate the talent on this team. And because of the HYPE surrounding this team, to quote Michael Irvin "the Cowboys essentially play 16 Super Bowls before the playoffs even start'. Part of this is Jerry's own fault. He sold this team to the entire football world as being Super Bowl ready, without REALLY UNDERSTANDING the mentality of many of his coaches and players. Most of them are too low key and to EAGER to fly under the radar to handle the bright lights Jerry invites. Granted bright lights are going to follow this team because of a history of success, but because of our playoff record futility record, because of the nature of the top players on this team, because of the nature of the coaching staff on this team, he should NOT turn the lights up any brighter with his constant media appearances, his constant sideline appearances, turning this team into Hollywood characters via Hard Knocks, and overpaying coaches/players as a means to get them to BECOME something they are not.
Outside of Terrance Newman (when he is healthy)...none of our secondary guys are premier players. Think about that for a second....75% of our starting secondary made the Pro Bowl last year...yet NONE of them are really all that impressive when you get right down to it. And Terrance Newman is semi-premier!
Outside of Jay Ratliff, none of our DL are premier players. Think about that for a second, we are playing with ONE semi-premier DL...and ONE semi-premier secondary player. Yet we are selling this team as a Super Bowl contender. And Ratliff is semi-premier!
Of our ILBs....NONE of them are premier
Of our OLBs....ONE of them is premier...and that is not good enough when you only have ONE semi-premier secondary player and ONE semi-premier DL. And yes, OLBs need to be able to be diversified enough so that the opposition never knows who they MUST double team...or who is coming and who is dropping in coverage.
So when you think about our personnel on that side of the ball..couple with the fact that we have 4 1st round picks (Spears, Carpenter, Spencer, Jenkins (I know it is still early on him) that are not even starters...coupled with the fact that MANY of them are tied up into long term lucrative contracts....coupled with the fact that the opposition treats playing our team like they are playing the Super Bowl...you get the results you have gotten this year....and that you have gotten over the last 12 games. Which is a 6-6 record. With very few solid, forget dominating, solid defensive performances.
Now to the offense
First of all, we made Jason Garett the highest paid coordinator in the history of the NFL...I guess the last 4 games of the season last year when TO was injured were not used to evaluate how "smart" Garret really is. I guess the inability to develop a WR opposite TO was not used to evaluate how "smart" Garett is. And right now, with the money we have tied up in the offensive weapons (Romo, Roy Williams, Witten, Barber, Owens, Felix, Crayton)...I find it beyond incredulous how many 3 and outs we have. I find it incredulous that we cannot get Owens the ball...I find it incredulous that this team has been reduced to basically one weapon (Marion Barber). You cannot convince me that Garret knows what he is doing when you consider how badly he is being schooled over the last 12 games. And don't give me statistics...watch the games and it is obvious that this offense is scaring NO ONE. I find it incredulous how teams with average CBs play press coverage. Or teams with average pass rushers give this OL fits.
Now to Brad Johnson...how obvious is it now that this ENTIRE organization was seriously WRONG about what Brad could and could not do. Sure he had not played in a while...sure the OL was average...but the way the Rams, with average defenders chose to defend us...says all you need to know about what THEY thought Brad can do. And now we ALL know what Brad can and cannot do.
Lastly the OL.. We just extended Flozell Adams for 4 years. He looks like his tank is empty and he has 3.5 years to go on his deal. Gurode as a Pro Bowler is a joke. Solid? Sure. Premier? No way. Columbo, just a guy. Proctor....if this is the best backup interior OL we have, it only strengthens my argument that our ability to evaluate is NOT good. And Davis...really like this guy...thought we paid him way too much to play guard, which is why I think he will be a OT next year....but we have this guy throwing combo blocks on guys already being blocked, while Adams and Columbo usher DEs to the QB
The "burden" of 13 Pro Bowlers is KILLING us. It suggested that all of those guys are at least semi-premier players at their position...and it is simply NOT true. Ware is premier. Owens is premier. Romo is premier. Witten is premier. The rest benefited from the 13 wins. And agents used those Pro Bowl "credentials" to acquire lots of Jones cash. Those Pro Bowl "credentials" persuaded Jerry Jones to spend lots of cash and invite even MORE cameras inside the ranch and add even MORE pressure to a mentally fragile group. And those Pro Bowl "credentials" have teams in the NFL circling the Cowboys on there schedule.
Lastly, I love DWare...best player on the team. But I am pretty sure he is about to become the highest paid defensive player in NFL history...and once again, we will be left wanting more than we are going to get. We are going to be left wondering how this team can have the highest paid defensive player in the NFL, and yet still be a defense that cannot deliver a dominating performance.
Jerry will not change...so all have to hope the players play to their draft status/paycheck...even if they are overrated/overpaid!
