The unsexy truth is that Goff, Prescott and Wentz are three talented young quarterbacks who have always been products of their environments. But we praised one, buried the second and did a little of both to the third because we're addicted to the Quarterback Narrative...Now we risk overcorrecting and reacting to our own previous reactions, dwelling on errant Prescott throws we used to ignore, overlooking Goff's many off-the-back-foot heaves or obsessing over whatever the Philly sports talk guys dream up about Wentz.

That's not careful analysis, or even accurate observation. It's just narrative. And we still have a long way to go before we figure out who ranks where.
Tanier is right, of course.

Terrific analysis of the QBs Dak, Goff and Wentz. The analysis of the Rams - Cowboys deserves some play here.

The things Tanier mentions are showing up on Daks QBR. Go to the ESPN QBR site and look for yourself..

Thanks for posting. Normally don't read bleacher report but this one is well worth it, as it is a reality assessment not a pick a favorite and anoint them. Great link

You should read Tanier. He's the best NFL writer out there, despite where he plies his trade now (he's a Football Outsiders and Sports on Earth alumnus).

I have one very specific concern about Dak: accuracy in the pocket. He still throws great on the move, but if he can't stop airmailing intermediate throws from the pocket, there's a ceiling on how good he can be. But the wildly shifting narratives, here and elsewhere, based on a game we lost by 5 points with a -2 turnover ratio and a horrendous matchup problem, fielding zero quality linebackers against a very strong running team, those narratives are just noise.

Agree
Difficult to win consistently against the best teams if the QB can't make good throws and decisions from inside the pocket in the context of your usual offense
Making splash plays outside the pocket can't be his staple

Will do regarding writer, and right on with your assessment. Been wondering if its Dez routes or just inaccurate throwing due to fearing backside pressure which has increased this year.

Dak is great at avoiding turnovers, but in so doing at times he may hold on to the ball too long or think Dez will just go up and get it as those throws always seem to be too high, minus the low one to me Dez as a pro should have caught.

The most sensible comparison I've seen from any journalist or any poster on this board. Top article

Some QBs can win by themselves, some need the coaches help. Dak won in an offense that was catered to an aging Tony Romo. The league has sniffed it out. We may need our staff to cater more to Daks game or we may need a new staff.

"Prescott has also developed, despite a pair of losses. For evidence, see the drives mentioned above, Sunday's late comeback bid that ended with two-point conversion penalties, or anything that happened after the second quarter on Monday night against the Cardinals. Prescott only suffers in comparison to the unsustainable highs of last year, when the Cowboys were in complete command of nearly every game and he rarely had to force a throw."

Which is what I've been saying. It's a matter of expectations. Dak being drafted in the 4th, everyone is waiting for him to fall and jump on every opportunity to prove the predaft folk right. Goff struggled and now is coming around some. Since he was the 1st pick, he gets unbelievable amount of leeway to grow but Dak does not.

He will be stuck in this rutt until he does something like Brady and wins a title. Until then, many people are going to be watching and waiting for him to fail.
