Count the Eagles among the teams who are being aggressive in the early part of free agency. Cornerback Asante Samuel, regarded as the best free agent on the market, is visiting the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. He will meet the Philadelphia media at the NovaCare Complex later this afternoon.

The 27-year-old Samuel has spent the past five seasons with the New England Patriots, recording 22 interceptions in 75 career regular season games, and five more interceptions in 14 career postseason games. He was a fourth round draft pick of the Patriots in 2003 from Central Florida and has played for two Super Bowl championship teams following the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

I dont believe that the Eagles are two or three players away from contending and this kind of signing indicates that they think they are. I think its a weird signing for them.

If I were them I would try to sign 4 or 5 mid level players to try to rebuild the middle of that roster and not bring in an over payed corner

this guy is overhyped, and I'm glad Jones didn't fall into the trap of persuing him! The thing I like about Philly signing hims is that Dallas was able to trow on NE (i.e. on Samuel), so it's not like he'll shut any Dallas WR down. If anything, Dallas should go after Randy Moss, because Moss did more to improve NE's defense last year than Samuel did.

I don't like to see him in Philly, but I do think he's partly a product of Belicheat's system. They will have to vastly overpay for him and it'll get their cap out of wack.........very un-eagle like really.

I don't doubt it, but they haven't exactly had a stellar record drafting WRs. A run at Moss (or Berrian, hell even Isaac Bruce) would have made much more sense (though improbable). They don't NEED Samuel. They've already got two good corners, but their WR corps flat out sucks.
