ESPN: Raiders talking McCown
April 8, 2007
John Clayton of ESPN.com reports that the Lions are in trade negotiations with the Raiders regarding backup quarterback Josh McCown.
The Raiders apparently are looking for a veteran QB as they mull whether to draft LSU's JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame's Brady Quinn with the top pick in this month's NFL draft. McCown signed with the Lions last off-season, but lost the QB competition to Jon Kitna and saw his only game action at wide receiver.
"Josh signed with the Lions and wanted to play," his agent, Mike McCartney, told Clayton. "He deserves to play." McCown is in the final season of a two-year deal and will earn $2 million this season.
Clayton also says that Tampa Bay is interested in moving up in the draft from No. 4 to the Lions' position at No. 2 to nab Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson.
Quick hits
• Rob Rang, a senior analyst for NFLDraftScout.com, made five predictions about the draft in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. No. 3 was: Both the Detroit Lions (No. 2 overall) and Washington Commanders (No. 6) will trade down in the first round.
• After much lobbying on his own behalf (hey, the man has priorities), Chicago returner Devin Hester has been granted a 100 rating in the speed category in the upcoming Madden NFL '08 video game. It tops the previous high of 99, given to such players as Deion Sanders, Randy Moss, former Wolverine Charles Woodson and a few others. "That's just about the best thing you could have told me," Hester gushed to ESPN.com.
Lions talking with DT
Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported that free-agent defensive tackle Kenderick Allen is in talks with the Lions.
"I know they still like him," agent Harold Lewis said of the Packers, who got two games out of Allen after signing him to a one-year, $700,000 deal. He later went on injured reserve with a foot injury.
"They said they'd get back to us before the draft. We're just trying to find the right opportunity. Is that Detroit? Is that Green Bay? We'll find out."
If Allen, 28, signs with the Lions, it would be the 6-foot-5, 328-pounder's fourth team in five NFL seasons. He also played for the Giants and Saints after leaving Louisiana State.
Press clipping
• Carl Kotala, Florida Today: Ricky Williams says he hasn't smoked marijuana "in maybe three years" and couldn't be happier living in an ashram in Grass Valley, Calif., where he meditates and teaches yoga. ...
Asked the last time he was drug tested, (the Dolphins tailback) nearly chuckled and said, "The last time I was tested was about two minutes ago."
He wasn't worried that he wouldn't pass because he said yoga has taken the place that marijuana once held in his life.
