Astros game gets a 0.0 TV rating again, and this time it might be more troubling

Once again, the Houston Astros are in the cellar — of the local TV ratings.

Monday's game against the Los Angeles Angels earned the saddest rating of them all, 0.0, according to Nielsen (via the Houston Chronicle), which measures TV viewership. Angels star Mike Trout couldn't even help this one get a 0.1? Sheesh.

This has actually happened before. An Astros game last September got a 0.0 rating. It was up against a Houston Texans game and actually lost to reruns of "21 Jump Street" and "The Cosby Show." Ouch. Monday's Astros game had competition from NASCAR's Duck Commander 500, which was delayed a day by rain. The race earned a 1.7 rating.

We're only a week into the 2014 MLB season. It's the time of the year that every team still has a chance, even the Astros. Sure, they're already 3-5 and tied for last in the AL West, but they played the New York Yankees tough at home last week. If the Astros can't get any love from local TV watchers in April, what's going to happen in September?

I expect a bumpy year from the Astros but looking at their minor league system they are building, Houston future is looking brighter. No longer is Houston willing to trade good young prospect for big name vets that they can't afford for more than a year or 2 only to then find a depleted minor league .

Part of the problem is that their games simply aren't available for viewing. I've lived in Corpus Christi since 1988, and the Astros have been the "home" team here since that time. Up until they set up their deal with Comcast Sports, they were shown here all the time.

Once Comcast Sports took over their broadcast rights, we haven't had a single game broadcast here. I think even if you live in Houston, you can't see the games on tv unless you have Comcast.

It's a very messed up deal.

That's 90% of the problem really. It is even difficult to watch the Rockets locally.

Same here in San Antonio, although they are on TV tonight as they're playing the Rangers. First game on TV since last year when they played the Rangers.

I know they suck now, but they are still my team. Comcast has made it basically impossible to follow them. I hate Comcast. At least I have my Spurs and Penguins to keep me occupied for the next month plus.

Try being a Mets fan and go out and order SNY only to find out the games are blacked out anyways due to MLB rules. The package isn't offered on UVerse and I will never go back to Comcast....burned one too many times by them. Looks like a dish is in my near future
