The following players are likely to be available around the 14th slot:

David DeCastro, G, Stanford
Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College
Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama
Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

Which player do you take?

Or do you move down some in round 1, pick up extra draft choices and select among:

Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC
Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

I hate that we missed the playoffs, but we're certainly going to have top prospects at many of our need areas at #14 and below.

Upshaw would be very tempting, but I would take DeCastro.

While we need a good G I go CB. I think you have a better chance getting a good G ( possibly starter) in the 2nd round than you do getting a starter CB there.

That is just me.

OG/C is our biggest need so I would go with DeCastro. If a top CB drops to #14 then I would take him.

I am very against moving down for more picks. We need quality talent not more scrubs.

after consulting with some gerbals I was informed that

We could go with dis (DeCastro) or we coule go with dat (Dre Kirkpatrick)

The problem with the middle of the round is that it is a zone where you are not always getting quality talent. It depends on the draft and how it is approached. If the idea is to take the best player, regardless of position, it can work. If the idea is to take the "best CB left" or some other need, it can be worse than trading down as the talent is often graded the same as the end of the round.

I do not like moving around in drafts, but we may not have a choice to just sit pat. We have so many depth issues (20 plus players hitting free agency) that we could need to add some additional choices unless free agency can fill some.

At least 2 of Boykin, Minnifield, Hayward, Hosely, and Jenkins will be there for us in the 2nd. There's no need to pick a cb at 14 just because its a need. We need to go highest ranked player on our board at OG, CB, or OLB. And there's still tons of time to determine who that will be.

Whitney Mercilus from ILLINOIS, OR Upshaw, but Upshaw defenitely won't be there. If they are not i'd go CB, Stephon Gilmore from SouthCarolina. 6'1 195.

Hey Al, how have you been?

I think you are correct in that we may be forced to move either up or down and that's not good. When you are forced to do something, it usually means that Jerry will give up more then he needs to in order to facilitate. That's never good.

Kilpatrick will be gone before fourteen, believe me. First cb off the board.

Heard of Morris Claiborne?

I think as has just been pointed out Morris Claiborne will be the 1st CB taken. I understand Kilpatrick could be gone by 14 but the draft always seems to have some surprises in guys not going as fast as some of the experts think.

As bad as our defense has been, I have to agree with running to the podium to select DeCastro from Stanford...he's huge, and he's supposed to be possibly the best interior lineman in the past decade...that's saying a lot considering Iupati ended up starting this past year.

Could the kid from Stanford be another Larry Allen, who was a second rounder, by the way?

I agree with that and I would not reach, but if I have them ranked together on my board I take CB over G unless the depth at that position that year dictates different. I don't study the draft prospects much, but if, like you said, the depth of the draft dictates G 1st and CB second you have to do that.

The all-star games and combine can't get here soon enough.

DeCastro every day and twice on Sunday. CB is deep this year.

I am just hoping more top tier players declare.
That way more talent and the player we want is sitting there.....
