At least Jim Rome is on our side

It' obvious that Jim Rome is a Romosexual. And unlike Skip he actually knows the diffrence between hasn't and can't. Just about everything he says about Romo is on the money. This coming from a guy who just can't stand Rome. Especially when he bashes soccer saying that noone cares about it when the only countrys in the world that soccer isn't popular is Canada and the U.S. But thats another issue. Anyways he loves Romo and I think thats about the only cool thing about him.

I agree with this thread 200 percent!

You are right ....and dead on.:starspin

Real football doesn't take breaks, stop after every play, take timeouts, or "play for 60 minutes'. In reality every player only plays about 30.

Soccer players are great athletes, but don't belittle the athletes that play American football. In truth, you are comparing two completely different things. Football is all about quick twitch muscles. Exerting great amounts of force for short periods of time. Like two 300lb. lineman shoving on each other or a reciever sprinting down the field. Soccer is all about slow twitch muscles. Long bouts of sustainable energy outputs with an occasional burst of higher intensity. What football players do would be physically impossible over a long span. Do you really believe Bolt could have ran at his record setting pace for 60 minutes? Do you believe a guy benching 500 pounds should be able to do it for 60 minutes?

No other sport besides football ( soccer for those in the states) , has the passion of a country backing a team. Olympic games are nothing compared to the world cup, champions league, or euro cup. The world cup, for those who like soccer (forgive me rest of the world for using the term soccer), is like having a superbowl last weeks, countrys come to a hault during games. Im hoping for the states to do good, maybe then people will enjoy soccer. But hey, were the only ones stuck back in the english customary system of units, so im not sure when we'll change our ways.

My parents are European, so I grew up enjoying watching the World Cup with my Dad every four years. Since the U.S. was fairly poor during those years I usually cheered for the German team since my Dad is German or the Dutch team since my Mother is from Holland. I was actually in Europe, leading a tour of students, during the 2002 World Cup and almost got beat up when I told a group of rabid English fans on the Tube (subway) that I really didn't care all that much about Football (soccer)!

I think one of the reasons why soccer gets so much angst from fans of other sports, is that it tries to fit its European/South American model into the American sports scene. When I was coaching football, we missed out on several kids because of soccer, but that was fine, it was their season to play soccer so be it. Then in the winter, we missed out on kids playing basketball because of indoor soccer. Then when I was recruiting kids for my Track and Field team I missed out on athletes because of club soccer. But then as soccer fans tell me "There is no soccer season!" That's pretty un-American, if you ask me.

Secondly, I get really tired of Soccer fans telling me, in an arrogant manner, that "Its the most popular sport in every country other than the U.S.!" Which is a lie, and its overall popularity partly comes from the fact that its region of origin (Western Europe) politically dominated the poor countries of the world for decades.

I would rather watch pool...than a soccer game! Soccer is only good for one thing......3, 4, and 5 yr olds......only because they can't play football yet!!!

Goes to show what Americans know. We always called it "corned" beef on this side of the pond.

That's for straightening us out on that one. I'll be sure to call it "corn" beef from now on, so as not to insult any true Irish person I might run across.

It's hilarious that people find soccer boring and yet love baseball.

How about people who find soccer and baseball boring as hell? Soccer, something my kids can play on spare time, but it amounts to jack in this country where everything is normal and everywhere else is just different :D

The guys defending soccer in this thread are precisely the guys Rome makes fun of on his show. No wonder they don't like him. They're trying to explain why the game is so good, but that's just it. We don't care. We've seen it. We don't like it.

"You don't get it."

You're right. We don't and we don't want to.

Regarding Romo, pretty much everyone who has ever interviewed the guy or spent any time around him really likes him. He's down to earth, honest, likeable.

I enjoy Rome's show. I don't agree with everything he says and sometimes he can be annoying (I don't care about Jim's race horses), but he's a polished, excellent interviewer (the Everett thing was a long time ago ... he's changed since then), and some of his schtick can be entertaining.

Like Hos says, Rome is right about Romo and soccer.

Soccer players are no the best atheletes in the world. Far from it. They do not play for 90 minutes, half the time they spend walking with short sprints. Yes I played soccer in High school when a shoulder injury kept me out of football for a season. I don't know people think that they are the best atheletes. It is nothing compared to football and far from exciting.

Maybe because baseball fans aren't subjected to a million 1-0 games. And in soccer, two measly goals is oftentimes an insurmountable lead.

i think this is the first pathetic post i ever seen u post... lol well ur right about Rome being right about Romo but seriously dont hate on soccer.

ah i take it back its ur opinion i shouldnt say its pathetic because everyone has their own opinon. luckily ive noticed that the last couple years the popularity of soccer is growing again not people watching i have no idea about those numbers. but ive noticed a lot more people having their kids play soccer again and ive seen a lot of people who didnt care for soccer before at least discussin it. it wont never reach the popularity of the other major sports here in america but it doesnt need to because of the popularity it has in the rest of the world.

Uh you could say that about every sport dude. Football what offenses spend around half the game on the field really depending on how good the offense is at moving the ball for T.O.P. then they run a play every 40 seconds for which a play at the most last 8 seconds. you cant argue football players are the best athletes in the world if we are going by how much they spend in action on the field. Baseball same thing. Basketball you can no doubt argue are among the best athletes because they spend the whole game running and moving on both offense and defense. Soccer many people just dont realize how tough it really is to play and the incredible amount of stamina u must have to play. I played both football and soccer in middle skoo and high school and soccer was so much tougher on my body for me to play and to recover from. many people dont believe me that ive talked to about but it is because of the incredible stamina u gotta have throught the game. To me soccer players are easily the best athletes and a lot of people agree with me and not all of them are soccer fans. just a lot of people i know that played in high school or still play in local minor teams.

Low scoring games is the biggest myth in all of sports. You always assume that 99% of soccer games end in a scoreless draw when that couldn't be further from the truth. There are as many touchdowns scored as there are goals scored. The only diffrence is how much they are worth. If touchdowns were worth 1 point there would be same scores as soccer. BTW, it's not soccer it's football. America is the only country in the world that calls it soccer. A group of fans don't speak for all of the fans. So don't judge 99% of the fans because of what the rest do. If anything american football bores me than real football. Real football doesn't take breaks, stop after every play, take timeouts, or "play for 60 minutes'. In reality every player only plays about 30. Real football players have to be in the best condition of any sport. Cause when they play 90 minutes non stop they really do play 90 minutes. You wouldn't last 5. You also think the super bowl is the biggest game in the world when it's nowhere near it. Don't bash "soccer" because I can easily bash american football(as much as I love it). It's a mystery to me why people love golf(how did tiger ever get injured when he has never broken a sweat in his life) and hate soccer. For some reason you think golf is exciting. How is that possible?

I got this from wikipedia in regards to the 2006 World Cup.

112 total games played by my count.

41 games an opponent or both teams were shut out by my count. 36% of the games.

26 games tied by my count. 23% of the games.

31 games a team only scored one goal by my count. 27% of the games.

165 goals scored (I did not count overtime games decided by penalty kicks).

That is an average of 1.4 goals per game TOTAL.

So your assumption is definitely not true that
There are as many touchdowns scored as there are goals scored. The only diffrence is how much they are worth. If touchdowns were worth 1 point there would be same scores as soccer

I do not know why you think soccer games are equivalent to the NFL in terms of scoring...they are not.

Not saying you are wrong for liking soccer, everyone has different taste. However, the scoring is very low in soccer with a lot of ties.

I wonder what the scores would like if you removed all the penalty kicks during regulation from the scoring as well?

That would drop the scoring even more.

Ever hear of a radio/t.v. personality? I went to high school and played baseball with Jim Rome. What you hear on radio and see on t.v. is an act. He is nothing like you hear or see on radio/t.v. He is actually a very nice, respectful kind-a-guy!!

It bothers me not one wit how he is in person, that he's respectful.

His meanspiritness against the defenseless and his immature acts against other nice guys (Everett) is the main complaint, at least by me.

But I am sure he has plenty of followers who are otherwise fine people.:)

Gimme a break! You and the anti-soccer crowd seem really xenaphobic about it.

You keep talking about it so much it makes me wonder if y'all freel threatened by that sport.

We've seen it. We don't like it.
Sounds like some ol' codger from a B western.:)

And for the record, I enjoy soccer less than I do hockey. And I can't stand hockey. But I don't spend my energy hatin' it. Or lose sleep over it..

Iffin you like that shrimp, gah head. He's just flat not likable. Much like soccer.:)

Wow, such a tenuous grasp on the realities of athletics sports in the modern world.

Ya know, as far as soccer being pushed down anybody's throats here or soccer trying to push the European/South American model on the U.S. sports scene you are so way off, buddy, you come off rather . . . uninformed.

Iffin you can find anyone being coerced to see soccer, let me know. I will be there with you buddy to break that up. But, in fact, it's called a free society.
And I really think you show a lot of fear or paranoia about a simple game played with a round ball. From the boisturous Manchester stadium to the dusty streets of Lima.

Again, for the record, I would never go to see a soccer game. Nor would I go see bowling. Or golf (talk about lame). Just personal preference.

But don't be all general and stuff and be saying that soccer is being pushed into the American model (whatever that is, Mr. Global Exclusive MacKeepItOut). When last I heard, American football and Basketball are being pushed in Europe and American-nuanced golf and tennis are being pushed in the developing Asian countries. Whether we can fit the big-money, loud, trash-talking model into those areas, I will get back to you on that.
:D

But, really, don't lose any sleep over soccer.

Focus, if you can, on good ol' American football.

it's hell of a lot more interesting than watching a pitcher chew tobacco, shake his head, and look around for two minutes after every pitch.
