It wasn't fair to saddle Mike McCarthy with Dak in a longterm deal as he tries to fix the team. No one could forsee how well he and Dak would gel, or how Dak would work with his system. Dak is not a finished product, therefore he leaves too much to chance.
It was tying McCarthy's hands in an unfair twist.
Now there is a year in which McCarthy can evaluate EVERY player and coach, and go with the guys that work best in his system.
Dak would have been an extension of Garrett in a long term deal, believing he was secure because of the way he played under Garrett. A longterm contract would have made replacing him almost impossible if he doesn't pan out. Now he has more pressure to adapt to McCarthy's system, or move on.
It was a good day for everyone. Even Dak- whether he knows it or not.
