The Atlanta Falcons and the City of Atlanta have come to an agreement on key aspects of a deal to build a new home for the NFL franchise.

Talks of building a new retractable-roof stadium in downtown Atlanta to replace the Georgia Dome have been going on for months, but Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Falcons owner Arthur Blank announced a deal to move forward during a Thursday afternoon news conference.

Wow! The Georgia Dome is not old at all having opened in 1992. I think that is the quickest search for a new replacement stadium I have ever heard of.

Yeah. I always thought 25-30 years was more the norm. But that was a crap stadium.

classily timed! When the country is hurting, people are unemployed or furloughed, cost of living going up, health insurance going up, taxes going up.....and a sports team wants some money to build a new stadium. This is part of what's wrong with the country's mentality. Equally against it when we did it a few years ago.
The worst part of it all, they take our tax dollars to build stadiums then charge us ridiculous ticket prices to enter it.....and yet we keep opening our wallets....

I don't pretend to be an economist, but doesn't a project like this put thousands of people to work building a stadium for years? Doesn't this help unemployment? Is sitting around on your hands really the answer?

A lot of people in Atlanta aren't thrilled about this.

People never are.

They'll live, get over it and line up to by opening day tickets.

I think the city just feels it's stupid to build a brand new billion dollar stadium just 6 years after doing a massive upgrade of the current one.

Probably so but if the dome sucks, it sucks.

Also, if it helps them get a Superbowl it will be worth it. Last one was in 2000 and if they can get on the regular list like Dallas now is, it'll pay for itself. Not to mention the amount the city is paying is capped at 20% it looks like.

That's true. Still waiting on details on the seat capacity. I have serious concerns about the fairweather Falcons fans selling out a dome larger than what they have now. They have had several years of blackouts while losing, and even had issues selling out when they are good. The city is a huge transplant city, so you don't have an overwhelming home town support for anybody but the Braves for the most part.

Arthur Blank wanted to do this when he bought the team. There were talks of building a stadium more to out in the suburbs since the Georgia Dome isn't in the nicest of areas in Atlanta. The problem is that building it anywhere else will be a logistical nightmare because the MARTA sucks and only goes to a limited amount of locations.

I think the retractable roof is a good idea. Atlanta has excellent fall weather, but winter weather is awful.

The main reason they are building a stadium is because Blank wants to keep all the Falcons revenue and control all the expenses of the stadium.

The people that are not liking this new stadium are the season ticket holders. They have to possibly purchase seat licenses just to get season tickets.

I would be stunned if Blank didn't get PSL's for the new stadium.

I'm interested in where the public funding will come from. Atlanta took one of the largest hits of any city in the country from the housing collapse.

A friend of mine bought a nice condo for $175K back in 2004. He bought a new house (he's a CPA with a lot of money) and I asked him about the condo and he told me that he can only get offers of $40K for it. And it's located inside the city in the Vinings area.
