Here's Todd Archer during his weekly visit with David Smoak on KTBB Radio...

Archer talks Cowboys with Smoaky

Do the Cowboys know what the heck they are doing when it comes to developing offensive lineman?

Jacob Rogers? Stephen Peterman? Rob Petitti? James Marten? E.J. Whitley? All drafted within the last five years and all gone.

Then we go to the ones that are on the team and we still don't know what they are: Pat McQuistan and Doug Free.

So Andre Gurode is the one guy who the Cowboys drafted who has made an impact as far as being a starter. That stinks and it's simply not the way to build a good football team. Something has to be done to change this pattern immediately.

And the great point that Archer made was when he noted that the Cowboys were in plenty of games last season where they could have thrown McQuistan and Free in the game for a look see and failed to do so.

Instead of seeing what McQuistan could do at Left Guard we got to watch Corey Procter get whipped on a play by play basis. Then we had to watch Flozell Adams work with one arm instead of seeing what the supposed future Left Tackle Free could do in some live action.

Frustrating is only word that comes to mind right now.

Goes back to coaching and ours suck.

I would fire every scout we have that scouts offensive lineman. We've been through two coaching staffs and it's still not working.

Marten - drafted in 3rd round, cut

Free - drafted in 4th or 4th and hasn't seen the field and we've extended both Flozell and Columbo in the last year.

McQuistan gets thrown off balance and can be tossed aside. He can anchor, but if you lose leverage and lose your balance, you are a liability.

He couldn't beat out Proctor.

Next...

Free is on thin ice, imo. He got destroyed in the Vikings pre-season game and regressed from the previous year. Adams should have been pulled form the Cardinals game. That tells you all you need to know about where Free is. Adams was playing hurt.

The Dolphins are looking to get bigger and stronger on the o-line. They have paid Herman Johnson a lot of attention. They have looked at Cornelius Lewis and people like that.

Sparano looks like he was impressed with Leonard Davis and wants to get away from Parcells' template for o-line. Parcells liked quicker, athletic guys.

Those busts you listed are out of that mold.

The Dolphins are looking for a new center.

I predict that they will take Eric Wood or Antione Caldwell. These two centers are about the same size as Andre Gurode. Both are good run blockers and strong.

DC great post as usual,
I have tried to make that point across to several of my friends and some members on this board and i got blasted somewhat for it.

wade had a big chance to put in free, or mcquistan or joe burger whom was on the cowboys roster all of last year and never played a down.

but did wade put those players in, no,

that frustrated me to no end, just like when you mentioned flozell with one arm, and free or mcquistan didnt get put in, why?

the main scout, Tom ciskowski was at one time a college offensive line assitant coach for Tony Wise no less.

Hopefully we can find a tackle and an interior lineman this year.

I think the reason that Free and McQuistin didnt get any playing time over Flo with 1 arm is kinda the whole point.

Flo with 1 freaking arm is better than both of them!!!!

OT depth is zero...fortunately this draft is pretty nice when it comes to that position. If one of the necer prospects slips into the first portion of the 2nd round, I see us trading up.

Why would anyone blast you for wanting to look at a backup? I can see some would not think much of a backup. But why not look esp if it meant nothing towards the outcome of the game.

Todd has a great point. We need depth on the OL. And we need to draft them not buy them. Too expensive.

Houck is suppose to be the man? He needs to help the draft and development of these players.

Weren't most of these or all from Bill Parcells, Wade inherited them, All under contract still. We do have a new head scout in place now. Yes, coaching could be part of it, but they can only work with what they are given. If they are given mud instead of clay, how can they sculpt a masterpiece.

Marten and Free are on Wade. As is giving a 2nd round tender to Proctor this offseason.

It has nothing to do with the supposed inability of our staff to develop an offensive lineman. You cannot turn chicken crap into chicken salad, outside of Yeag's Family recipe. :)

Our problem is missing on drafting the right O-linemen. If it were just about developing, then after we cut Rogers, Peterman, and Petitti, Bellicheat would pick them up and make them all pro.

We just have to do a better job of scouting as it regards to the OL.

Why do so many fans assume that it was the wrong decision for Wade Phillips not to put in Free and McQuistain? It's the coache's job to put the best/most capable players in there at any given time. Ever consider that a healthy Free and McQuistain are not as good as other injured linemen who can technically still go? In that case, keeping those injured linemen in and the backups out is the right decision. So instead of blasting Wade Phillips, why not holed Free and McQuistain more accountable for only developing into busts, and still not being good enough to replace our hobbled starters?

I don't but that BS that one player who can only use one arm is better than another NFL player who is healthy.

That's fun to say and read and to take a shot at Free and McQuistan.

But the problem is that Flo told Wade that he's good to go so Wade just shuts up and goes with him.

Sometimes it's up to a HC to take control and sit a guy.

Wade proved his point with Procter never being taken out until the second half against Philly.

And no one ever said Flo couldn't go back in if Free was that bad. At least give the kid a chance.

I love to hear how stupid Wade is. He's a great DC but he's too stupid to see Flo can't play well enough and too much a coward to replace him. I will admit it's a mystery to me why Flo stayed in the game and in hindsight perhaps it really was the wrong thing to do. Probably was.

But to think he's stupid is well......you get the right word. BTW, why wasn't Houck pulling him or going to Wade and telling him his guy couldn't go?
