Audio: Gilyard talks about possibility of becoming Cowboy

He learned enough of the playbook at Cuse to score a TD in I think every game this season. On a completely anemic offense, that's pretty impressive.

And since he's not going to have to step in and be a star at WR, we can take a chance here. We've got three or four guys that can play, if we can get a big time playmaker, we should go for it. If he's a headache, oh well. It's not as if we need to build a whole team and a third rounder is going to make or break next season.
Charles Rogers put up even better numbers than Mike Williams. He also had better tools to work with. People like him can produce in college. Unless they have insane physical talent ala TO and Randy Moss they probably won't amount to anything.

It's possible...it's also possible they don't want to waste their time in a classroom when they know they are going to be playing football anyways.

I just don't think I recall anything of Williams not working or playing hard on the field. I know that you can make the comparison of difficulties in the classroom and discipline...but I just don't think that's always the case.

It's like...I work at Mickey D's right now to pay rent. I don't do more than I have to. But I work hard and get good grades in school because I know it's going to pay off and I'm not going to be working there my whole life. I don't see the point in wasting a lot of effort there, but you'll never question my work ethic at a real job.

I love that Gilyard ran so slow. Now he'll definitely be available at our second pick and possibly even our third.

He'd contribute immediately in, arguably, our biggest area of need

Gilyard isn't slow and he sure as heck wont be slow on turf.

Here's Mardy Gilyard on with Galloway and Company of 103.3 ESPN Radio talking about the possibility of becoming a Cowboy...

Mardy Gilyard on GAC

I have to admit I was not happy with his 40 time of 4.56, but he's a very dynamic punt returner and could be a nice addition to the offense as a bubble screen guy and a slot WR.

With his slow 40 time he may just fall all the way to the third round. If he's there in the early 3rd I would not mind the Cowboys moving up in that round to go after him.

no Thanks, we need more speed...not a slow return guy.
If that was his true time.

Interesting listening to Herm Edwards yesterday. He said he likes to watch players on film to see how "fast they play" as opposed to their 40 time in a straight line in shorts and t shirts. Said some people play faster than their 40 time because of instincts and some slower. Makes sense to me. Another interesting piece about the combine I heard this morning from someone on the radio was McCoy, from OKL, was being discounted because he only did like 23 reps on the bench. Dude said Warren Sapp did like 13 reps on the bench when he came out.

whatever herm edwards says, do the opposite

;)

That's pretty funny. I do find it interesting that so much value is put on players 40 times and how high they can jump without pads on. I think his point was see how they look on film for 3-4 years as opposed to being overwhelmed by a 40 time in shorts.

I read the reason he quit was because of school.

"Schools's always been my problem".

Something like that.
I thought he quit because he was going to get a one game suspension or something and he didn't want that.

All that counts is his game day speed!

Character is what you do when no one is looking. I fear too many people have this attitude and that's why they don't pan out when they get a "real job"--if they ever get a "real" job. Sorry to vent, but this is relevant to the issue of bringing in high character players--players with a work ethic (it pervades their whole lives or it's not really work ethic).

did Mardy refer to himself in the 3rd person when asked if his return abilities seperates him from other wrs?

Wow. He did. Incredibly lame

Yes.

Sounded pretty stupid.

Would Taylor Mays be able to run down Mardy Gilyard on a long punt return?

We know the forty times are not everything, but they do have value.
Taylor, has great angle of pursuit speed so yes he would catch Gilyard, on a kick return, or punt return.

That being said great 40yd times does guarantee a player will shoot up the draft board come draft time, and yes 40yd times are taken into account by scouts, and GMs alike but the key is can they play at the next level.
