Here's Miles Austin talking with The Michael Irvin Show from the airport where he's about to board a plane to go talk with the Jets...

Austin talks Cowboys and Jets

What's difficult about getting a big raise if the Jets offer him something and then the Cowboys match that offer? The kid is riding high right now.

He's got the company line down pat right now. Just talk about how you are doing your job and you let the pieces fall where they may.

I think he wants to be a Dallas Cowboy when this is all said and done, but it's tough not to go check out the Jets (he's from New Jersey too) and see how much they want him.

It's going to be a tough decision for Jerry to let him go if the offer from the Jets isn't all that crazy. I don't want Jerry to panic and think that Miles Austin is the key to the offense by any means because he's not. The Cowboys will get a second round pick back if Austin leaves and if you combine that with all the picks they already have they can do something via a trade, the draft or FA to replace him.

Miles is a good kid and that's what you hear when from him in this interview. He's praising Jason Garrett, saying he could never knock a QB and he's refreshing with his comment that even if the chemistry wasn't going well he would say it was, lol.

Right now I think it's about a 75/25 split that he's back in Dallas. The Jets will probably not overpay so that means Jerry will match the offer and Miles will be getting a nice raise.

I'm not that worried about this, but i'll say alot of the draft projections have the jets taking a WR. If they somehow land Austin my feeling is they do whatever it takes to get Mark Sanchez. The jets can't have alot of money after the last seasons and this years free agent spending spree's. Austin will probably get a reasonable offer, something Jerry will have no problem macthing.

I think its possible that the Jets make a strong play for Austin IF they feel they need WR contribution RIGHT NOW.

We both know that Austin has a leg up on any 2009 draftee in his ability to contribute immediately. Those are the odds anyway.

For Dallas, the value of Austin is the same - he's game ready. A 2nd round draftee might turn out every bit as good or better than Austin in the long run. But we need contribution NOW.

That's the wild card in this tug-of-war.

Jerry will overpay for him as he has left himself with no backup plan.

Pat Crayton at #2 scares Jerry too much not to show Miles the money.

Or be left with egg on his face that he hyped up Miles as TO's replacement only to let him walk.

I think Austin will be back unless the Jets make a ridiculous offer, and I don't think they will.

He's going to be back unless the Jets sign him to a ridiculous contract.

I wonder if folks have considered that Jerry is a salesman...if he wants a 2 and thinks he can get a 2 for Miles, you think he would not hype him up?

If Jerry's history has taught us anything it is that he gets what he wants. How this deal pans out will show either (1) he cleverly maneuvered a 2 out of an unheralded developmental player or (2) he got his number 2 receiver locked down with a new contract...

imo, the only way we will be unable to assess Jerry's true intention in all of this is the dreaded poison pill...as we would not know if he wanted to match the deal since he couldn't...

anyway, should be very interesting to see how it plays out...

I've been saying all along that this is a great way to extend Austin.

Let the Jets do the dirty work for him.

All this assumes no poison pill, however.

The unwarranted Jerry hate is so funny.

I met him in Dec. A really down to earth type of person. He appeared very open and sincere when he said that he hoped to be a cowboy for a long time.

There will be no egg on his face. Miles is not TO's replacement and everyone knows that. He's got 18 freaking rec.'s in 3 yrs. Roy is TO's replacement. Your love for TO is getting old.

How much does Tory Holt command money-wise? I'd take him, assuming it's not prohibitively expensive, and a 2nd for Austin. It will take some of the sting out of having no first this year. I would spend those two 2s for OL/NT.

Jerry always has a plan, just not every fan agrees with what he does or says. And what does "overpay" mean. If he turns out to be what the Cowboys think, or we as fans hope. Then he will not be overpaid.

To some, if he catches 50 balls and scores 5 TD's, he will be overpaid, other will be average, and others will think underpaid. Then that one makes Jerry look good.

What does Crayton have to do with it, they know what they have and why would he scare them. Crayton is a solid WR.

RW is now the #1 WR, Austin is not here to replace TO.
