A story broke yesterday about Pat Watkins being involved in a slight 'skirmish' in a Dallas Area strip club. He wasn't arrested during the incident so that's the good news. The bad news is that the story is now out there and it seems Watkins doesn't want to talk about it.

Here's Watkins on The Ben and Skin show yesterday...

Watkins on Ben and Skin

Is he in the long term plans for the Cowboys? If I was making the decisions he wouldn't be and it has nothing to do with this 'skirmish'. I just haven't seen anything special from Watkins. For a while he was known as a good special teams player, but can you remember him making one good play as a special teamer last season?

He's not a starting Free Safety or Strong Safety either in my opinion. And those positions are basically the same these days in the NFL. Watkins doesn't make enough plays against the run or against the pass.

About the incident. The way Watkins is saying that he 'isn't supposed to talk about it' says something to me. Just speculating, but it sounds like a legal adviser has told him not to talk about the incident. Maybe the people he was involved with in the skirmish are going to be looking to sue him in the future. We did hear in the initial report that someone had to be taken to the hospital.

Just another knock, no matter that it's very minor, on the Cowboys and the discipline problems surrounding this team nowadays.

he is one of those guys that I fell in love with after the draft, and I really hope he catches on. Sort of like Romo, Austin,Choice. I liked Choice from college, and Austin and Romo were just two guys I really liked watching play. Any cowboys fan who says they didn't feel thrilled watching Miles face when he ran back the kick for a td in the seattle game is just crazy. Thats what football is all about. Romo for the same fun reason. I dont know why I always like Pat, but I hope he works out.

Personally, I think we draft a Safety this year (if not two), and I think Watkins could be the odd man out.

R Williams (re-structures)
Killer Davis (re-signed)
Hamlin
Rookie Draft Pick

Plus we keep 6 CBs on the roster.

That's 10 total for the Secondary.

I'll say this for Pat Watkins... he is slightly better than atrocious.

Watkins was another guy Parcells raved about after we drafted him that hasn't panned out.

Parcells is overrated as a personnel guy.

I think Parcells took a shot on him in the fifth round because he thought the kid could become a good ball hawking Free Safety with his size and speed.

But Watkins doesn't seem to be able to use that size or speed to his advantage in getting to the football when it's in the air. All of his interceptions are from overthrown footballs 40 yards downfield. He never even breaks up any passes.

And why Wade ever thought he could be a Strong Safety who would have to drop down into the box every now and again is something I will never understand. Watkins has never been a good tackler and he's a stick figure who will get run over every time out.

Watkins IS a good special teams player. You didn't see him last year because of all the injuries. As for his safety play, he gets out of place quite a bit.

What annoys me the most about these boards, is one guy can say something completely off base and a herd of people who also have no idea what their talking about agree as if it were fact and start calling for player heads.

:bang2:

Is Watkins a starting calibre safety? He hasn't shown to be, but he is damn cheap and one of the better special teams players we have. To cut him is STUPID. He is a BACKUP safety and a GOOD special teamer. Until you have someone IS BETTER, he should remain on the team.
