In talking to Shango, a great friend of mine who does DCFanatic Radio with me and can be seen here - www.dallascowboyshow.com, recently he's been making a great point about that in the last few seasons Jerry Jones was seemingly trying to put together the cast of a movie titled 'The Dallas Cowboys' as opposed to putting together an actual football team.
Today Drew Pearson was on The Michael Irvin Show and he's thinking along the same lines of Shango...
Pearson talks about being a #1 WR
That's great stuff. A lot of people say that Roy has loads of pure athletic talent, but that he's not very polished right now and tends to think he's much better than he really is at this point in his career.
I definitely agree with Pearson that the athletic talent alone can't make you a great WR. Now what would I like to see happen?
I would love to see Michael Irvin working with Roy because if you have read my blog for a while now you know that I think these two guys are very similar in their 'body style' and in some ways their 'skill set'.
What I mean by that is that Roy is a wide body like Mike was, he has great hands in space and he isn't afraid to be physical at the LOS in making his way past a CB. They both have those choppy strides and they both have great body control near the sidelines as well.
I may be wrong, but I think Roy can be just like Mike in his physical game if he works on refining the little things.
The mental part of his game is whole different story. But Roy is only a few years into his career so we can't say whether or not if he could wind up being a great leader when it's all said and done just like Mike was in his time in Dallas.
And because I love the Cowboys I hope Roy is that guy at some point in time.
