Here's Sam Hurd on ESPN 1250 in San Antonio earlier today...

Hurd on ESPN 1250

Sam is going to get a shot this season if the Cowboys don't add any more WR's in FA or in the draft.

Right now I think he's behind Roy, Austin and Crayton on the depth chart.

He's not the fastest guy, but he is a solid route runner and has good hands. His problem was that he had veterans in front of him and then when he finally got his shot last year he went down with that ankle injury.

I like that he says he's been working on his speed. If he can improve his straight line speed he could get some looks in place of Crayton on the three wide sets.

There has been some talk that Travis Wilson and Isaiah Stanback have looked good too though. So Hurd had better not come up with any injuries this spring or summer because that might lead to him fighting for a roster spot come late August.

I think the Cowboys have a few pet cat receivers this draft and if they arn't there they won't just reach for one..If Stanback and Hurd can progress I think we are fine at reciever. Bennett and Felix are also classified as recievers in my book too.

Why do I think a trade up into the 2nd round (not pick 51) for a WR would push either Stanback or Hurd off the roster?

I'd also like to see a 5th or 6th round WR as well.

This is a great shot for Hurd, Austin, and Stanback. I hope they bring it. And I think Big Dog is right, if Dallas gets a WR in the 2nd or 3rd, I can see Hurd or Stanback getting pushed off the roster.

We'll see. Training Camp/Preseason will be big for all the WR's, RW11 included. Should be fun to keep up with.

Hurd isn't going anywhere unless Dallas finds a guy who will be the 4th receiver and can be a beast on special teams.

As long as he is a great special teams player it will be tough to unseat Sam Hurd off the Cowboys roster.

Juaquin Iglesias will be the steal of the draft at WR in late round 2 or early round 3. He has great hands, explodes out of his breaks, is tough, and he is sneaky quick in tight space. He will separate, and the Colts might draft him. He can get deep. Plus, he reads coverages very well. He's a punt returner and kickoff returner. He will come in and contribute immediately to his new team.

I would love to see the Cowboys trade Crayton and draft this young guy. I think he can do big damage in the NFL. He won't be an over confident, toxic, big mouth, either.

I want Hakeem Nicks.

Nicks did put up some highlight reel plays, but I think he's 'Roy Williams'.

And we already have him on our team.

04/05/09 - Pro Day wrap, Player hurt their stock: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina: A hamstring injury suffered at the combine kept Nicks from working out for much of the time between his time in Indianapolis and his Pro Day, but scouts were nonetheless surprised by how out of shape he appeared at the North Carolina workout. Nicks had gained 14 pounds in less than a month, raising questions about his commitment. - Rob Rang, The SportsXchange, NFLDraftScout.com
04/03/09 - Concern over Nicks' lack of blazing speed seems to have waned after scouts watched more tapes and appreciated his work in passing drills at a March 17 pro day. At the combine he had a best 40-yard time of 4.51 seconds and a vertical jump of 36 inches before pulling himself out of workouts with a pulled hamstring. His big-play ability was particularly obvious in the first half of the Meineke Car Care Bowl against West Virginia when he had five catches for 181 yards and touchdowns of 73, 66 and 25 yards. Two of his catches will be highlight reel material for years, especially the one in which he maintains control of the ball with one hand as he moves it from one side of his body to the other behind his back. Nicks set school single-season records last year with an ACC-leading 1,222 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns. - Frank Cooney, The SportsXchange, NFLDraftScout.com 03/28/09 - The Baltimore Ravens have scheduled University of North Carolina junior wide receiver Hakeem Nicks for a visit. An All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, Nicks has been plagued by a strained hamstring that sidelined him for the NFL scouting combine. He gained 14 pounds between the injury and his recent Pro Day, and that negative development could significantly hurt his draft stock. At his campus workout, Nicks was limited to positional drills, the three-cone drill and the short shuttle. The nearly 6-foot-1 wideout weighed in at 226 pounds after reporting to the combine at 212 pounds as he was unable to work out much since late February due to the leg injury. Several NFL teams are bringing in Hicks for medical exams and interviews. Healthy for the majority of his college career, Nicks was productive. He holds 14 school records, including marks for most career receptions (181), yards (2,840) and touchdown catches (21). Last season, Nicks registered a career-high 1,222 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. In the Tar Heels’ bowl game, Nicks put on a show with eight receptions for 217 yards and three touchdowns. His best 40-yard dash time is 4.51 seconds, which projects him as more of a possession receiver in the NFL. However, he has drawn high marks from scouts and draft analysts for body control, toughness and hands. - Aaron Wilson, Carroll County Times.

I don't think the Cowboys would look into any 'posession WR's' in this draft. If anything I think they will look at some speedy, shifty guys who can also return punts.
