Reports came out yesterday about the idea of Orlando Scandrick moving into a new role for the defense as a 'Hybrid Safety' which would be similar to the role Darren Woodson used to play for the Cowboys back in the day.

So today we got more info directly from the source as he appeared on The Kevin Scott and Greg Hill Show earlier today...

Scandrick on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas

The idea that someone can do some of the things that Woody used to do sounds awesome to me.

But can Scandrick handle the job duties which come along with the 'Star' position in this defense?

He sure has all the right answers so he definitely has me feeling optimistic that he's the right guy for the job.

I love his answers about how he is very eager to be a great player and that he's willing to buy into the system.

This is what I always want to hear from the players on my favorite sports team!!!

And he's right about the size issue. You don't have to be the biggest guy to play Safety in the NFL any longer.

Just ask Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu and Bob Sanders.

Well, it's better he's on the field than not, I guess. I'd rather have Jenkins on the bench and get a full time Free Safety.

That was funny as well.

His off-season holiday was to a GYM in California! That's classic!

They asked who goes to a gym for a holiday.

He answered, "Someone who wants to be great".

What a GREAT 5th round pick!!!!

My guess is in the base defense, we'll see Newman/Jenkins at CB with Hamlin and Scandrick at S.

Going into the nickle, Scandrick becomes a CB and we bring in another S.

So basically... in the base, is it better to bring in a FS and keep Scandrick at CB (if he beat Jenkins out)... or bring in Jenkins at CB and have Scandrick on the field at FS?

Yeah, I'm sure Watkins will be the dime FS. This is all contingent on us not drafting a safety very very early. We're definitely drafting one (or two) at some point but I doubt we force the issue in the 2nd if one isn't there.

Good point. Now we don't have to force the issue with Scandrick sliding over to that hybrid position.

Can you imagine Watkins as our starting FS in all packages?

Oh i love this guy. They want to put Scan and Jenkins on the field at the same time. This guy can hit and likes to hit, i think he can make the transition.

Our base defense will be scary! We now have two legit CB's, man to man on the outside, with a safety who has great speed over the top. The 4-6 will be unleashed upon offenses on a regular basis.

Also I think Hatcher may be better in this sort of defense, since he seems to be a decent pass rusher. Will be fun to watch..

I think this guy will do very well.... seems like he has the right attitude.

I hope they get that bitter taste out of my mouth!

And he is also a separated shoulder away from landing on IR at 185 pounds.

Well, he wasn't that bad last year. I guess that's likely more the result of having a crazy good passrush. But this is, what, his 4th season? The guy should be ready to start by now. If not, churn the roster.

It has the potential to be scary.

But we've been saying that for years.

Its still unknown how Scandrick will play at this new position, how Jenkins will handle a starting role, how the Canty replacement will play, can we get an OLB other than Ware to step up, and our ILBs cannot cover (Brooking, lulz).

Its got the potential.

But its been like that for years.

192 according to nfl.com

he said he wants to add 5 more pounds, which would put him at 197.

197 = 2X what you bench.

Very good potential with the emerging young CB's that we havent had over the years. The pass rush over the last 8 games shows us why we can/should be optimistic. Its gonna be fun.

at least Anthony Henry is off the field, and we have a lot more speed in the secondary. If you re-watch the second Commanders game in the second half. We had Jenkins, Newman and Scandrick on the field at the same time because Henry was hurt and the Commanders could hardly throw the football.

I like the idea of having Scandrick on the field at all times, with him as a FS on 1st and 2nd downs and than as a slot guy on 3rd downs. I also am kind of worried though about him getting hurt and us being thin at CB position and also how this would affect the running game.

I think Springs coming in here makes even more sense. Our CB depth will be shot to hell with Scandrick at S.

Not to mention an injury to Newman or Jenkins...

Is that right? wow good observation. I'm kind of excited to see this happen. But umm...can we get come more corners and safeties please? thank you.

exactly DC, just like belichick said with the patriots, safeties now in the league has changed, you have to have safeties that can cover

that something along the lines you no longer can be the big hybrid safety in the box, but you have to be able to cover now like you mentioned players like
Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu and Bob Sanders

id be drooling if we can sign Igor big DE from san diego, that way we dont have to reach in the draft, take best player available on the board, and theres bound to be at least one of the positions we need at

safety, offensive guard/center, defensive end, outside or inside linebacker, wide receiver and nose tackle
