Here's Marcus Spears on The Michael Irvin Show earlier today talking about the loss of Chris Canty...
Spears on Irvin Show
Can Spears play the NT in Wade's 34 defense and allow Jay Ratliff to play the Right Defensive End?
I don't think so. He's just not that strong at the 'point of attack' if has two blockers on him. He's a big body, but he doesn't seem to have the lower body strength that would be effective for the middle where he would constantly have to take on two guys from either side.
I still want Ratliff to move to DE, but I would rather leave Spears as the opposite DE on first and second downs. Spears has no business on the field in certain passing situations because has minimal pass rushing skills. The fact that he says his sack total would go up if he was on the field on third downs is absolutely ridiculous.
And Spears admits that Ratliff takes on two blockers on first and second downs. So why not get him over to DE so he gets more opportunities to face one on one blocking?
Big Nate is making all the sense in the world in this interview.
But so is Spears. The problem comes when you don't have the big run stuffing NT, and I mean a bona fide guy, already on the roster and you have to decide whether or not should be taking chances on moving Rat from a spot that he's been very successful at over the last two seasons.
Spears won't be getting a chance to be a 3rd down pass rusher by the way.
Wade Phillis gets the big money so it's his job to figure this out this offseason. I think we will know what direction Wade is leaning towards once we see how the Cowboys attack the draft.
I do like Spears closing statements in here about the 'window' not being open forever and that if this team doesn't find some playoff success in 2009 then it's time to start re-thinking the 'core group' of players on this team.
