...we all know about the third and 11 play where Austin went inside when it seems he should've gone outside, allowing Bailey the INT...but another play in the fourth quarter irks me as well...and this assessment should be a sobering reminder that while Austin had a whale of a game against the Chiefs he still has a lot to learn as a wideout...the little things...

...13:40 to play 4th quarter ....3rd and 7 on Dal 33

Formation: S11 with Witten as an H-back?...Williams wide left...Crayton slot left...Austin wide right...Barber as the RB

.........................#55
......v....v............[M]......v

.................VVVVVVV
.......Z....y....OOxOO.......X

....................w r b

...Broncos are showing blitz with all LB's on the LOS except for ILB D.j. Williams #55, whom it seems Romo is pointing at as the "mike" pre-snap...

...Romo must be thinking Williams will blitz, sending one man more than the protection can handle because he never looks left for either RW or Crayton...

...the question then becomes does Austin see it?...Bailey is playing off with inside technique, undoubtedly knowing that Williams will shoot the A-gap and attack Romo...Bailey probably does'nt mind if Austin takes himself out of the play flying outside...a pattern, incidentally, that takes too long to develop...the route Austin must run is to the inside and IF he runs a good route he can catch this ball on Bailey IF Romo is accurate enough...two big ifs but you get the point...

...put simply, it is a race between D.J. Williams getting to Romo and Austin getting to the area he is vacating...but Austin never breaks off the route, instead flying outside of Bailey and the ball lands curiously where Austin should've been...the Cowboys go 3 and out...

...as far as Garrett is concerned...it probably is'nt a good idea to go after a pro-bowler like Bailey...you won't make a living throwing at him...as the Cowboys found out...

Miles ran a slant and go on that play and could have gone for a TD if Romo was able to let the ball lose but Romo threw the slant.

It's come out since that game, from several sources (as reported by Nick Eatman and Randy Galloway), and even Roy Williams said, that Romo was the one at fault and Miles ran the right route. Which brings up the greater point: it's almost impossible to know who's at fault on these plays if you're not in the meetings. One thing you can point to his that they weren't on the same page. Or maybe Romo was just getting rid of the ball.

And for people who wanna point to the goal line plays as Romo losing trust in Miles in that game, on the 4th down play that Hurd made, Romo was actually looking for Miles on the slant on the right side (yeah, against Champ) as the first read but the safety came up and took away the slant. He went to his next 2 reads and then scrambled.

I know your focus is on Miles. But the most disappointing thing about that game was the defensive letdown at the end of the game when it mattered most.

Especially letting Marshall get wide open and running after the catch for the go ahead TD. That was poor.

Miles more than made up for his poor performance the following week setting a Cowboy's receiving record that may never be broken, at least in our lifetime.

Marshall wasn't wide open, Newman had decent coverage he just lost the jump ball....the tackling on the other hand was pitiful.

Wide open???? Newman was in perfect position. He simply could not make a play on the ball.

It's not that he couldn't make a play - the ball simply went over his outstreched hand. I can't blame him for not being the same height as the receiver.

perfect pass and catch. and who else is waiting for Orton to come back to earth? Right now, I'd vote him into the pro-bowl. Kyle Orton? Kyle Orton!

I dont think we need to be calling our WR's for a bad play here or there when the QB has had enough bad plays of his own to worry about. He's been far from perfect.

Miles was open on the 4th down play to Hurd that CBailey held him and broke up.

Romo never saw MA, it works both ways.

...he did'nt have time to let loose unless somehow Davis picks up Williams who comes through the A-gap...that's why i'm wondering if Austin needed to break off his route because it seems that he can see [or anticipate] Williams blitzing because at the snap he's shooting straight at Romo...it's not a delayed blitz

I still don't buy that Austin went the wrong way on the Bailey int. If he did he did, but if it was an option read, he turned the right way: away from coverage.

True...Which, for me, just underscores the lack of discipline/coaching (Penalties too) that has been discussed over & over again

kramskoi and newnation ...

Just a note of thanks for these technical posts outlining plays, even if I don't understand them much. I learn something about football and maybe about players' football IQs. ... Much better than my usual ill-informed rant about the politics at VR and personality flaws of Jerry, Wade etc.

OT I wonder if Garrett overthinks or underthinks, relative to other OCs.

I am surprised you haven't been verbally pummelled by apologists claiming that Marshall held and yanked his jersey at the line of scrimmage.

I guess there is still time.

well you dont win many jump balls when you throw out a 2" vertical. In his defense, he was going backwards on the play...still, give me at least 6-8" at least.....that would have been enough to knock the ball down.
