Austin police searching for cobra believed to have killed man

Police are searching for a cobra that is believed to have bitten an 18-year-old man who died Tuesday evening.

Police believe Grant Thompson, 18, owned a monocled cobra and that it bit him in his car while at the parking lot of a Lowe’s at 13000 North Interstate 35. Thompson died after going into cardiac arrest, medics have said.

Police said it is possible that the snake is still in the area and are asking anyone with information about the animal to call police at 512-974-5210. Police described the cobra as black with a distinctive circle on its back and a tan underbelly.

Police urged people not to approach the snake, which is considered highly aggressive, and call 911 immediately if they spot it.

So maybe some legal guys can help here; shouldn't the owner of that snake be held accountable for the death of that kid?

Oh.
I read a teenager was found dead in his truck and had snake puncture wounds. I didn't read that it was actually his missing snake.

The person who was bit was the owner of the snake

I don't get people who own deadly snakes, they are not pets and will kill you.

I don't get it either. If a small dog or a cat get startled by its owner and accidentally bites or scratches, most adults would survive that type of occurrence. The same would hold true the majority of time with a large dog breed although they are likely to inflict more damage. The game changes with a venomous snake. An accidental bite by a snake native to the U.S. can cause some major harm or death. At least with a native species hospitals are somewhat equipped to handle those bites. They have antivenin or can get some in a decent amount of time. A cobra or some other non-native species? Why would any hospital carry the required antivenin for those snakes? One small mishap and you are likely dead.
