I recently received a letter in the mail saying that I owed the state 401 dollars in penalties and other things because I didn't file a state return in '07. They said I could file it and not pay the charge. Well, looks like I'll be getting back 75 dollars. All that just to give me money.

Lesson learned. File your taxes, or they'll get you for every cent you have.

I didn't file a return for last year, but the government owes me money.

I don't know what I did with one of them.

One year when I lived with my parents, I claimed myself as a dependent and my parents did the same. The IRS caught it and I ended up owing around $40 since I didn't make much. Not a big deal, but it sucks to see that letter.

There's a video on YouTube where this former IRS employee speaks out about them. She said for businesses like laundromats they'll monitor your water bill to determine how much business you're doing and if you're claiming enough. I'll try to find the video.

Here it is:

BTW why would a state care so much, when they owe you money, to give you that money?

Because it's not their money to spend. They can't do anything with it.

Maybe they are just checking their books and notice a problem.

Other times it might be someone that requested an audit.

My dad's ex-wife used to report him to the IRS to have an audit done on him just to be a pain. He was never found to have been wrong in the filings and it was just a way to irritate him. I think after 3 audits that all came back correct they must have told her to stop doing it as he has never been audited since that time.

Now I doubt someone put your name in to be audited and I don't even know if that is just something someone could do on a federal level or if they can even do that any more.

Chances are they were just going through the books and realized you had not filed for that year so they were cleaning up some stuff.
