This is one of the needs going into the offseason. The problems where do you find a quality backup LT? There probably arent 20 truely starting caliber LT's in the NFL, and when you factor in there are 64 starting OT jobs in the NFL, it makes finding a quality backup for Smith a near impossible task. If you are looking at it via FA, the Byron Bells ( players with marginal starting experience) are probably the best you are going to get.

It is tough to find one and hard to draft one ready to play unless you use a high pick. And do you use a high pick on a backup?
I suspect a bell like player is what they will go with

Or a 3rd honestly...
We spent a 3rd already, and it was Chaz Green. A scrub who cant stay healthy. I'm all for spending draft loot on a swing tackle. With Tyron's injuries its basically a starter. But pick the right guy this time, please. Not a guy who could have been had in the 6th or 7th round.

You do not hit on every draft pick yanno?

Draft priority 1 or 2.

Doug Free was a 4th rounder.

Unless someone form the Cowboy hierarchy comes out and says Tyron ain't playing next season, I'd consider spending one of the 3 4th rounders this team is going to have on an OT.

To spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on a OT to just let him (probably) sit on the bench in a "just for emergency" situation is not the best use of available resources, especially when a DT, a LB and a WR are needed more.

Here is your short list for UFA Tackles.
Nate Solder
Greg Robinson
Chris Clark
Breno Giacomini
Donald Stephenson
Garry Gilliam
Byron Bell

so ya, I would say that Tackle.. period.. should be considered highly in the draft.

Draft (or sign) an actual tackle, then put La'el back over there where he is far better suited to be impactful. Let La'el be the emergency swing tackle.

After they just extended him for big $?

Not going to happen.

Collins & Smith will be your starting OT's.

They'll draft a guy... Probably in the 4th or 5th rounds... Maybe two guys. They'll sign a veteran and that will be that.

The odds of drafting a tackle in the 3rd or 4th who can develope is fairly reasonable
The odds of getting one ready to be the primary swing tackle in the 3rd or 4th, not so good
And do you use a top 2 pick on a backup because Collins is being paid and most likely continue to play RT

Getting another Free would be a solid find in the 4th.
Or a Parnell in UDFA land.
Development is key as well.

You are most likely correct
They should have a better idea on smith than we do. If they think he will be able to continue at a high level then a mid rnd developmental guy is the right move
If they don’t then it’s a huge priority
