Back up: Maybe the Cowboys’ quarterback depth is not as bad as we thought

There are times when preseason NFL games are almost unwatchable. With teams understandably doing all they can to protect their starters and key depth players, we often are “treated” to a bunch of third- and fourth-stringers bumbling about. Quarterbacks who will soon be on the street are unable to connect with anyone (except perhaps defenders). Punt follows punt. Even the evaluation of the players involved can be severely hampered by the general ineptitude on display.

But that didn’t happen in the Dallas Cowboys’ 20-18 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. Although it was not a massive display of offensive firepower, and no sudden star emerged unexpectedly (like a certain Dak Prescott a year ago), this looked much more like a real football game than so many preseason affairs. And that was largely due to the generally credible jobs done by quarterbacks Kellen Moore, Cooper Rush, Blaine Gabbert, and Trevor Knight.

There are some things to like about Moore, he knows how to run Linehan's offense and isn't afraid to put the ball down the field, but he's so tiny I'm afraid he wouldn't survive very long and then we'd have to trot out QB3!

More meaningless overevaluation from a meaningless preseason game.

Pretty meaningful for Rico Gathers and Cooper Rush. I guarantee you that all 31 other teams in the NFL took notice of those two. 31 Waiver claims would be put in if Rico Gathers would be cut by the Cowboys. Cooper Rush made his name known and teams will keep an eye on what he does the rest of the camp. We shall see if the Cowboys give Rush a chance to build on his performance or intentionally relegate him to 4th quarter, pre-season mop up duty to hide him for the PS.

What we may think as meaningless, could have special meaning for other teams. Miami had no interest in QBs until Tannehill gets hurt and now the Dolphins are leaving no stone unturned. Moore, McCown, and Rush are all auditioning every game going forward. Miami might be interested in Moore or McCown. If Rush steps up next game, I'll gladly listen to trade offers for Moore and McCown from anyone.

Honestly, it's just good what we didn't learn Thursday.... ie, had the back-ups played horrendously bad, THEN we would have something to talk about... ie, that our suspicions that we need to look at other options were supported by evidence.

But indeed, that they played well versus the competition that they were playing against ONLY tells us that much... that it's not outside the realm of possibility that we maybe can be okay.

Four more games before we can reach any decent... not even firm, but decent... conclusions on the matter.

Floaty Moore(ht Reality) is the perfect example of brains vs brawn

He is a walking talking OC on the field but he can't quite reach the pedals

If we could add Moore's brains to Weeden's body we could have something but he wouldn't be a back-up I guess

Im happy with where we are at QB right now. Dak, with a vet backup Moore or McCown and Rush as 3rd stringer isnt too bad.

I think McCown would be able to start a couple of games if Dak goes down - probably better than Moore.

The only problem is that Moore HAS to make the 53. If he doesnt, there'll be 3 waiver requests from the NFC east - our opponents would love to download his Cowboys knowledge.

Me, I can't say I'm happy, but temporarily content.... it still echoes in my brain just how many times I posted here last preseason, desperate for something to be done, and not trusting the direction that Cowboys' braintrust was following.

After what's transpired, I have to give them the benefit of a doubt, and especially so at least until I see either Moore or Rush or both take serious steps backwards in preseason.

I remain simultaneously hopeful and skeptical... in my temporary contentedness.

That is an interesting point about Moore and his knowledge of the system. Counterpoint to that is that you could say that about just about every backup QB in the league. Also, the Cowboys aren't known for their trickery or intricate offense. And I don't think the reads or keys to the plays are much different that many of the other offenses in the league, and college. Dak said the he basically ran a lot of the same plays at Miss St. as the Cowboys, just called the plays different names. None of us are really surprised at the Garrett/Linehan offensive play calling. Pretty vanilla if you ask me, and mostly about execution.

the question is not will Moore make the squad his 2nd QB. The question is will Rush make the squad.

No denying Moore has the easiest path, but can't agree that it's beyond question already that Moore will be on the team. Not at all.

I'll say if 2 of the next 3 games are pretty disappointing, he will be one of those on the fence in that last game.

Moore is such a known commodity for his intelligence ,preparation and genral knowledge of the game and loved by his boss I might add.

First preseason game... Come on now
Why ? Go look at the game thread... many were saying how horrible the team looked and the season was doomed .. why can't someone over react in the positive way about some pluses from the same game ....

Don't get me wrong I personally don't disagree that it is only the first preseason game .. 1 of 5 and we all just need to pump our breaks but heck there are many posts where people are dismissing new draft picks careers as busts , calling the team doomed. Why can't others state positive opinions and enshrinement after one game too ?

Entitled to your opinion.

I don't disagree with any of that except that last sentence.

I'll even concede to you that, if he were to disappoint as I've described it, still then it would be necessary for another clearly better option to arise. It is by all means his job to lose, no doubt about it.

Lose it, though, he can, under the conditions I just described.

Let's both hope that it doesn't come to that.

I think both sides of the extreme need to be toned down (or up depending on how you are looking at it) because it is first preseason game. Besides, Kellen Moore isn't showing us any more than what he has few years ago, we know what we got in him. Right now, not that much
