Back-Up QB Concerns??

Does anyone else have concerns over our back-up QB situation? I am not believing for one second that Brad Johnson can get the job done if something should happen to Romo.

Considering the history of QB injuries in the league, it is rediculous to think that Romo won't miss at least a little bit of time at some point. If that happens we are in no way shape or form ready to compete with Johnson in at QB.

I understand that some of the guys signed this offseason may not be all-world but they would be an upgrade of Johnson IMO - Carr, Harrington, etc...

Obviously this isn't a need on the level of CB, RB or WR but it could come back to haunt us if we don't come up with a feasable option.

Thoughts?

I might have some slight concerns but, please, tell me how Carr would be an upgrade from Johnson in any way OTHER than his being younger?

Besides that I saw last night that Carr signed in New York to be Eli's backup and Joey resigned with Atlanta to compete for their starting job again.

Like I said - "Guys that have already been signed".....Carr would have been an upgrade over Johnson. He can at least get the ball more than 15 yards downfield.

Not to mention I have some faith that Garrett could get something out of these younger guys that haven't done much.

Yeah he'd get the ball more than 15 yards up the field. To watch it comeback toward him with yet another one of his costly, bonehead, interceptions.

Or, more likely, he'd just hold onto the ball for 3 days at a time and take a franchise record 93 sacks cause he's too dumb to dump the ball off.

Last year I was all for signing Carr over Johnson until I saw Carr play. Johnson is a better option than Carr and that is pretty sad for Carr.

Maybe Garret could send himself in. The only time we got to see bj play much last year was in pre-season where he wasnt that great. I thought matt moore did a much better job. I hated to see that kid go.

Do you think we could trade some equipment for Vinny Testaverde or maybe bring Drew Bledsoe out of retirement.

Obviously drafting someone would not make a feasible back up this year, and i dont know of anyone else in free agency that is an upgrade over bj, I do not want byron leftwich, i dont know what culpepper is doing, but i dont think i want him either.

I am slightly concerned, but if we lose Romo then we are probably done for anyway.. That being said, I suspect Dallas with either draft a QB in the late rounds of the draft or bring in an undrafted QB... Who is that QB that ran a 4.4 40 at the combine??? Maybe we can get him..

I agree that Johnson fills me with no confidence at all.

However, the days of having someone like Steve Beurline backing up someone like Troy Aikman are over, unless your team stinks at several other positions and you are way under the salary cap.

I believe it's time to find another undrafted FA or late round draft choice. In today's NFL, I think the backup (whose skills and ability have to be several notches below Romo's) needs to be fairly mobile. If you draft or find a fairly young guy who can make the basic throws, but maybe doesn't have the arm or other qualities that would ever make him a starting NFL QB, but who can also take off and run for a first down now and then or prolong a play under pressure, then you are set.

I'm thinking of a guy like Jason Garrett himself...a guy who is smart but doesn't have the physical ability to ever start in the league, yet a guy who can get the ball to an open receiver, make the easy throws and not panic, but add mobility for today's game.

I'd be happy with that...any thoughts of having a QB who could get the job done should Romo be lost for the season is a crazy pipe dream in today's game, imo, but finding a mobile guy who could finish a game or start for 2-3 games during the season and keep the offense going with his own qualities that don't match those of Romo's...well, that's possible.

My number one characteristic for a young, backup QB would be a very mobile guy who loves to pull the ball down and take off running but who has some accuracy with a few basic throws. I think a team can roll with a very mobile backup for a few quarters or a couple of games.

Even though Johnson has the crappiest arm in the league, we dont need whoever we have as a backup to want to act like a starting qb and chuck it fourty yards or make boneheaded play attempts in an attempt to prove their worth. They are a backup for a reason.

I would rather have johnson, who is a smart player who knows his limitations and will pass to our all pro tight end and screen passes to MBIII and safe passes to the WR's. Sure our playing field will be made smaller but at least we wont have Carr or Losman trying to be god out on the field when everybody except for them knows they are obviously NOT.

Are you thinking of someone like Dennis Dixon or Tim Tebow?
