Background on Dan Bailey

It isn't like Bailey's getting hit out there on the football field. He's a kicker. Don't know how much his back has impacted him. I agree with the rest. Once you start having back problems it always comes back. I've had back problems for over 20 years. Most days it feels good but then sometimes just out of the blue ,if I just move it wrong ,it can go out.
I liken it to Tiger Woods injury. Its repetitive motion I jury that hurts the back and is hard to come back from.

We’ll see how it works out, but I actually like the Bailey move because it seems to follow the patriots habit of getting rid of players a little early rather than waiting until it’s obvious.

All those 50 yarders with ease will be missed.

I loved Bailey. The guy was injured last year so I gave him a pass.

Thanks for the info about his herniated disc. I didn't know about this. Do we know the location of this disc? If it's low, it could be a real concern.

In general, I think the coaching staff knows many things about these players that fans don't. They work with them everyday- not only on the field, but also in the "classroom". They know things about their intelligence, work ethic, injuries, etc... that fans will never know. Roster moves that make no sense to the average fan are often well reasoned and thought out.

I liked Bailey, a lot, but you'd have to be Stevie Wonder if you missed how badly his game had slipped.

He missed Extra Points last year, which is inexcusable unless you are injured. If he did have the yips at some point in camp and they felt like his back could flare up at any time to force an IR stint, its a much safer move to go with the new guy.

Another factor is this is going to be a ground game/passing efficiency offense so getting points anytime you get inside the 40 is a big factor. The new rules are heavily tilted toward a big leg on kickoffs as well.

On top of all of that, you would be paying 3 million bucks to a guy that might limp off the field at any moment so you can send Jeff Heath out to kick.

HIPPA medical privacy laws have some effect on injury information that is released by teams. The team can say player X is out with a back/hamstring/etc., but they are limited on details they can release on chronic injury issues which are not the immediate reason a player is missing a game or practice.

I do wonder if they wanted Bailey to get surgery at some point in the past and he elected not to get the surgery.

The Jets must have missed the memo.

Backs are strange things. I can lift heavy objects at work all day long and throw it out walking down a flight of stairs.
It's when you least expect it and feel great when you have to be careful. When your lifting weights and running your back is fine but you twist funny getting something out from under the kitchen sink and it hits you.

Great research. Health definitely was a factor. It was just very strange that he did not get a lot of opportunities to keep the job since he didn’t get to kick in preseason. It almost seemed personal
Why personal?

I have not noticed much discussion of Dan Bailey's herniated disc problem going back to 2016.

It didn't seem to affect his performance too much in 2016. It was his worst season to date based on field goal percentage; however, it was not drastically lower than his previous low. It did drop significantly from 2015 (94%) to 2016 (84%).

In 2017 he missed some games with an injury that was reported as a groin injury. When he returned he was not good including back to back misses in more than 1 game, a 34 yard miss inside ATT stadium and a missed extra point. His percentage for the season was 75%. His career high was 94% and previous low was 84%.

A herniated disc generally does not get better per se. The pain might get better but the condition does not really improve without surgery.

He had some struggles early in the 2018 training camp (see one of the links below).

Wow back issues. That will do it.

Because when fans get attached to a player they will defend them even if they have to make up dark and evil forces that were out to get them. It's the same concept behind claiming CONSPIRACY! when we lose or had a penalty called against us (or not called for us) in a game we lost. If this were a polarizing player (like Dez for example) then it would have been called a good business move from the very start without a hint of need for further investigation.

stop saying smart things, it just confuses the masses.

it's almost as if the team wouldn't release a guy they love unless they felt he wasn't ever gonna be 100% for a full season again.

He hit 39 of 47 kicks in practice this year and 1 for 1 in one preseason game. 8 misses out of 50 doesn't sound like much but it is 16% misses under zero pressure and probably ideal conditions. Is Maher better than that? 82 % makes in his last two years in the CFL and I can't tell you the conditions but all CFL games are outside and some less than ideal. We keep trying to come up with reasons why. It's unfortunate that the team didn't at least issue a statement for a guy who held the record for FG's.

Assuming he signs with another team, a lot of Cowboy fans will be following his play. Good luck Mr Bailey

That's why Lawrence won't get a long term monster contract and I would bet that Tyron will be replaced in 2 years. They should be looking for his replacement next off season if he doesn't play 16 games this year.

Tyron gets replaced when he can't live up to his salary, which is quite low compared to the cap hit of signing a new player.

Could be in 2. He could last longer too.

One option is to start cross training Williams at T next year. Let him start at LG, and be the backup swing tackle, with a plug and play cheapo LG. LG is where older players can go when their agility fails but they still have power. With Frederick playing, we would have been more than fine with Cooper at LG.

With solid depth at LT, Tyron's back flare ups would be much less of a problem. Williams should be that solid depth.

I see Williams as the designated heir to RT when Collins' contract is up.

Is the op applying the same scrutiny to Tyron Smith's back?

Anyway, Garrett just said Bailey's physical problems were behind him. Sounds very much like Garrett didn't want to do this. I'm guessing this was penny pinching Stephen looking at the dollar signs.

I'm very concerned about Tyron's back.

I also would be reluctant to give DLaw a big contract because he has had two back surgeries.
