backup at LS

I wonder how many teams have a backup plan to their LS? After watching the Raiders lose the game last night, it was clear they didnt have one.

I'm just wondering if LP went down, who would handle our LS duties?

I bet every team in the NFL will be practicing some snaps with someone they would designate as the backup LS.

I would think a TE would make a good emergency long snapper, better hand-eye coordination or a LB. A TE or LB would have the needed bulk to do minimal blocking. Maybe Phillips or Hanna could do it.

If that doesn't work, maybe it is better to just line up in the shotgun as if you are going for it. Snap it to Romo and let him punt it and hope for a good roll.

Hopefully, they are working on identifying someone capable in a pinch.

I would hope that person has already been identified, and works at it some. I would think that as detail-oriented as Garrett is that this is the case, but who knows?

Hey, thats a good idea.;)

Cook, Costa, Arkin, Phillips, Hanna. Any of these guys would work. Hopefully Garrett has a couple of these guys working on the side once in a while just in case.

Phillips is the back up........... at least he was last year.

What is the rule on long snapping? Does it have to be through the legs? As kids, we would just stand up and toss it back like a regular pass and then kick it. Is that legal?

it may be legal, but as soon as you pick it up off the ground the defense can nail you. doesnt seem like a good idea.

can't toss someone like a TE in there to snap anymore than you can toss them in at QB--it's a skill that few can do well (like passing and kicking)--I'm sure the idea of having a backup has crossed the coaches mind

While I agree that we need to have a contingency plan, I don't think Ladoucer getting hurt should be a real concern...

...and I think last night's game was an example of the absolute worst that could happen. Long snapping is a skill, but the fact that the Raiders guy was so awful isn't indicative of the guys that would do it for every team in the league.

I bet Costa could do it. He's had quite a bit of experience on game day.

On a sidenote, in the game last night, the guy that the Raiders had long snapping was just standing around on the sidelines between going out there and messing up.

Once he messed up the first time, seems like he would've been on the sidelines practicing nonstop.

Just seemed kinda weird to me that they could easily find him standing around on the sidelines instead of practicing what was killing them in the game.

Raiders would have been better off had they gone for 4th down rather than punt. :laugh2:

all im saying is that i hope we have someone that practices it just in case something where to happen to LP. Can you imagine the eruption on this board had that been us vs the Giants last night?

I would learn how to long snap if I were Alex Albright. Talk about milking the most out of your God given talent into a prolonged NFL career. Special teams demon, backup to all 4 LB spots and long snapper ... he could play in the NFL 10 years with that skillset just through all the flexibility he could offer a team for gameday activations.
