Which makes more sense to you?

Have a backup quarterback who resembles your starter in style and strengths. That way you can build the whole offense around a system that will not have to radically change if the backup has to come in.

or

Have a backup quarterback who is different from your starter in style and strengths. That way if he has to come in, it presents a change-up for the defense for which they might be less prepared.

What say you? Plug-and-play in a consistent system, or throw in a little thunder and lightning?

Best Player Available to be the backup QB, but I'd take similar skill set provided both could run, gotta have a somewhat mobile QB for my system, lol.

The problem with having a backup QB who is very different than your starter is that you're likelier to pose more problems for your own offense than the opposing defense.

Ideal is a developmental running QB. We don't need to treat a backup like a faberge egg. The running is a bit extra that a backup can bring to help overcome his relative lack of talent.

Having said that, that's theory. In reality, we've got a starter quality backup in Dalton, so we play him.

Getting the best QB you can to be your backup is the best plan.

Having a HC/OC who can scheme and use their talent when needed is the formula for winning with them.

Clearly Garrett failed at this the last few years. I have MUCH more faith that McCarthy will have more success with Dalton than Garret ever did with all the failed backups he had.

Quality of player is most important. If he has a similar skill set as the starter that’s all the better.
