Current Depth behind Zeke
Rod Smith
Trey Williams

Smith has shown flashes, but we all know he is not the ideal fit, a pounder maybe, but that could easily be a FB role, should be.

Williams,, fill free to comment.

Not sure exactly where this team stands on addressing RB2/3 leading up to this draft, but considering that its an obvious area of weakness, it will be addressed.

This draft will provide excellent values at RB, its actually a pretty deep class, especially where we need to shop, rounds 3-5.

Curious if we will address that need with a draft pick, or let other teams draft them, and then shop for a vet cut that can feel that role.

They look to be showing quite a bit of pre-draft interest in NC State RB Nyheim Hines.

This is a deep RB class, but Rod Smith has done everything asked of him and looked VERY good when given opportunities last year. No reason he shouldn't be given every chance to lock down the backup role.

We should definitely take a back somewhere in rounds 3-5 though IMO.

This 100%. I hate this typecast mold ******** of saying someone is just a bruiser, just a scat back, just a third down guy. He's the #2 runner. He's gonna get 10 touches a game tops. I have no problem drafting a guy, but Smith showed he was more than capable of making things happen in spot duty last year.

My guess is they will take a Hines type RB in the draft as that seems to be the one everyone is talking about.

But I would also guess they would want at least one Veteran RB similar to Morris or McFadden. One that some deem past their primes or very cheap to come in here.

If Murray would take a really really cheap deal for one year to come back knowing he will not get much time...I imagine they would be ok with it...but I don't think he would do that unless he exhausts every other means.
There are plenty or vet RBs out there, but none really stand out to me. But if they did, chances are the cowboys would not get them as it would cost too much.

The NC St RB has been mocked to Dallas by nearly everyone in the 4th round

Hines is definitely an interesting prospect. 4.38 40 and he averaged nearly 6 YPC in a power 5 conference.

He is small (5'9" may be generous) and he essentially only played for one year as he was a ST player in 2015 and 2016.

We will draft one later. We usually do. I am hoping Rod takes the next step this year. Wondering if Cowboys pay Elliot after his rookie deal. But we need a second to step up and be consitent. Wondering if they would keep Morris.

I shouldn't have to really care about it but we saw a bigger difference then we should've seen with Morris on the field instead of Zeke.

Again.. These coaches.. Blah.

So we probably do need a talented guy there just in case. I like Rod Smith but we need to find a late round stud.

I have Hines on my short list as well.
Maybe a bit early, he will probably go before we start looking but I like Penny a lot to.
Hines is the burner, that could be had maybe with a 4, but speed sales, so might go higher, but still a strong mid round consideration.
Just need that change of pace back, that can offer that next gear in the passing game, not saying Zeke cant fulfill that role, but even great backs need a breather.

I never said anything negative about Rod Smith, I actually see some upside there, and we need that RB that can replace Zeke if he were to miss time.
I'm talking about the change of pace back that can accentuate Zeke.
Smith is the reason why Morris and Dmac are no longer on this roster, so I don't understand your immediate angst, or you don't understand the value of having versatility in your backfield.

Draft:
N Himes- NCSt
R Penny- SDSt
J Adams-ND
Bo Scarborough- ALA

Cheap vet:
DMurray
AMorris
APeterson

And I never said anything about you or addressed you...?

I think Rod Smith is a very good backup. And they can draft someone in the middle rounds with their comp picks they have and get someone else.

I must have been watching a different RB? Smith showed speed, strength, receiving and blocking ability. Dude balled out for the role he was given. He is a legit backup that can start if needed.

See on dspn, they had my boy the RB Sony from Georgia going in the first round. No to those vets, get someone in the draft.

Backup RB is very important. But there may be some vets cut after the draft.

I am starting to think that it would be best to trade back in the first and pick up another pick or two unless there is just a player we can't pass on.

Players we couldn't pass on would only be:

Nelson
Barkley
Franchise QB if we think we don't have one
Chubb

And that's about it.

Would not have a problem trading back a few spots BUT that would depend on who is still on the board.

Hines is fast but he's also 5'9 and 195 lbs. This guy is not an every down back and I think we need that in a backup. I like Jaylon Samuels much, much better.
