Backup Running Back

While I was sleeping .... What happened to Morris, ruffians?
i believe Morris was a FA and is still out there, whos ruffians? McFadden was also released..theres room for an impact scat back for sure or a fast third down back like Dunbar to run screens and jet packages for us.. io bekeive you will see Rod Smith with Zeke as his Fullback but at times it will go to the FB on this play and hes dangerous like this..

We’ll be in the market for a RB3 who plays STs in the late rounds. Rod Smith will be the primary backup.

Go the Distance!!!!!!!

Current Depth behind Zeke
Rod Smith
Trey Williams

Smith has shown flashes, but we all know he is not the ideal fit, a pounder maybe, but that could easily be a FB role, should be.

Williams,, fill free to comment.

Not sure exactly where this team stands on addressing RB2/3 leading up to this draft, but considering that its an obvious area of weakness, it will be addressed.

This draft will provide excellent values at RB, its actually a pretty deep class, especially where we need to shop, rounds 3-5.

Curious if we will address that need with a draft pick, or let other teams draft them, and then shop for a vet cut that can feel that role.

I don't see this as an area of weakness. Move Smith to RB/FB. I suggest all read my comments in another thread or review it yourself. Williams I need to see him in TC and preseason games but he looks like your 3rd down back.

I'm all for a draft pick and less so a vet.

I must have been watching a different RB? Smith showed speed, strength, receiving and blocking ability. Dude balled out for the role he was given. He is a legit backup that can start if needed.
I agree. The dude ain’t no Zeke, but he can carry the load for awhile if needed. He’s really effective in the 2nd half. Most RB’s are I suppose.

We will draft one later. We usually do. I am hoping Rod takes the next step this year. Wondering if Cowboys pay Elliot after his rookie deal. But we need a second to step up and be consitent. Wondering if they would keep Morris.

It SEEMS like it's a forgone conclusion that Morris is gone. IMO, we should hang on to him. He's not a threat in the passing game, but the man can bang out some yards!

While Smith has shown me that he can be a player in this league, I just don't see his role ever increasing behind a non suspended Zeke.
Is Smith better than Morris and Dmac,, indeed, and why neither are still on the roster, and why Smith will probably retain the RB2 status.
What I'm saying is that RB2 doesn't mean next option to Zeke anymore than that 3rd down change of pace back that we have been chasing for so long that I honestly cant remember.
All the Dunbars recently, Swirving Curvin Richards of the past,,, honestly, when if ever has this team had a dominate RB1 like Zeke, but also a home run threat as a breather?
Think about it,,, am I forgetting a pairing from the Emmitt days?
Adding that threat which can be had in every draft recently, does not devalue Rod Smiths role.

Don't be surprised if Dallas chooses to draft a speedy change-of-pace back to complement Zeke's physical running. What Trey Williams has to contribute in that respect remains to be seen but in the meantime, they might well decide to back up what they have in house with another pick. Smith could give Elliott some needed breathers if necessary.

An effective change of pace, speedy back could work wonders to maximize our running game, though. If we happen to get a good one to offer power and speed as well, so much the better. Like Parcells used to say, they don't grow on trees. We'd be extremely fortunate to find one like that at a mid range or later stage of the draft, however, which is about where we'll likely be trying to find one this year.
Thank you, that's what my original premise of this thread was,, you just said it with much better clarity.. it was a long day,, thanks Bullflop.

Samuels. He can run the ball, he catches everything, can split out, played TE and HBack. This guy could fit into our offense and actually contribute rather then just sit around holding his helmet and practicing on the scout team.

Sounds a lot like Olawale to me. With him and Smith already on the roster would like to see them get more of change of pace / scat type back.

The 3rd RB needs to be able to catch and run between the tackles, block as well as contribute on ST
If he can do that with his speed, sign me up

The knock on Williams is that he is small but I disagree. He's 5-8 and E Smith was 5-9. He's 190 and Smith was 205. Williams has good sized thighs. He can run inside although outside is best for him. I did not see him block. I think he could play 10-15 snaps although I doubt he'd need to.

I'd be tempted to have only 3 RBs with Smith a RB/FB. If there is an injury to EE or Smith then you call in a Morris type back. You're not going to find a better back unless you draft one.....which is possible. In which case you run Smith and the draftee as the #2 RB.

As it stands right now the RB draft pool is deep and Dallas has a lot of mid-round picks. Should be able to address this position without investing in someone else's veteran cast offs.

That's been my ideal. Churn mid round RBs and maybe we hit on a player.

Smith only has a year left on his contract too. I'd call it a need this year. Pick one up so we have someone on roster for next year.

I am wondering if we will l t him tote the rock.

As long as EE is healthy and available, I'm not worried about this posotion. And I'm not even concerning myself with this whole team again if EE isn't healthy or available.

UDFA or Cheap veteran. We got Smith. Why waste a draft pick on someone who’s going to get 5 touches at most a game. Baring has injuries. I don’t want Zeke coming out the games on 3rd downs.
