Backup Running Back

I have more confidence n Rod Smith...he's a solid RB2 to me. Therefore, I'm not really feeling using a 4th rounder on Hines. Plus, a COP needs to have some shake, Hines is more staight-line like Dunbar. Much rather get Samuels.

Ito Smith n Marquez Carter are solid options at RB3 here, Chase Edmonds runs like Emmitt Smith stylistically, like his game too.

...I expect a RB to be drafted somewhere in the 4/5th rnds+_.

Do you really think we'd only carry two running backs?

[The answer is no]

So then, you agree that we need another RB. I think we need another back that fits Zeke's skill set. I don't think that's Smith. Obviously, you are not going to be able to get somebody who has the same talent level of Zeke but you can get a back that has some of the same skills. Somebody who can run inside and outside, can block and can catch the ball. That guy fits the Offense with out having to change a lot of things and that's really what you want with a backup. I don't think the back should be a guy like another Dunbar. That's a third down specialist, change of pace kind of back. I think you need a back that can actually step in and fit the Offense if Zeke goes down. Now, if you want to get a third down back, then go ahead and do that but don't take that guy and plan for him to be the backup cause that's not realistic to me.

Smith is not the same kind of back as Zeke, to me. JMO

Bring back Murray to be a third down back

We also have Olawale who is a fast power back who can block

#29 is still available and it's April. Won't cost much, and he'll only get Morris' carries plus some third downs unless Zeke gets in trouble again.

It could be an FA, for sure. I would rather go draft pick because that's cheaper that way and you have more years of savings but, it definitely be an FA sign.

Rod Smith is everything you described; can run inside and out and can catch the ball.

I've watch Smith a fair amount. I do not believe he is the same kind of back. I actually like the guy but I don't think he is the same type of player. If the team thinks so, then that's fine. I mean, I don't know how they could, when Zeke went down, he didn't exactly start it on fire but the team would certainly know better then I.

#29 is still available and he's quite obviously the best sign, has experience as the league's leading rusher behind most of this oline and zbs scheme. Plus he can teach Zeke a few things about ballcarrier vision and getting open better in the flats.

I believe that Dallas is content with Smith as the primary backup based on what he showed last season. At most, I expect Dallas to try to provide some competition and fill the third spot with a later-round pick, probably from the fifth round on. I certainly don't see it happening in the third round.
Smith was awful last year. I don't know why people are buying into his hype. I recall several short yardage runs last year where he spun and went back first into the hole. For someone as big as he is I don't think he hits the hole hard. People will try to quote his 4.2 ypc average last year but he had one run of 45 yards. You subtract that one run and he ran the ball 54 times for 187 yards or 3.4 ypc. We can easily upgrade over him by taking a RB in the 4th or 5th round.

UDFA or Cheap veteran. We got Smith. Why waste a draft pick on someone who’s going to get 5 touches at most a game.
It's more than just getting 5 touches.

Don't forget about Special Teams.

Draft a kid with some speed. The draft is loaded with them. I want Zeke getting 25 carries and the second guy getting at least 10.

Spare me the 30 year old sludgers with familiar names like Murray and Morris.

And he can block...lol Smith isn't as fast as Zeke but he can do a lot of the same things Zeke can. Smith was great last year and I wish he got more of the carries instead of Morris just so we could see even more of what he is. Smith's skill set is intriguing.

As it stands right now the RB draft pool is deep and Dallas has a lot of mid-round picks. Should be able to address this position without investing in someone else's veteran cast offs.

With how deep this RB draft pool is, I could see us possibly getting a good one as an UDFA. Like, I could see someone like Lavon Coleman, Bo Scarborough, or Jarvion Franklin (Western Michigan) going undrafted. If either of them do, they'd be worth bringing in as UDFAs.
