It's time to stop drafting projects and while BPA sounds good in concept, I think we would all agree if we drafted a second round tight end again we would all collectively flip our lids.

When was the last time we drafted a player not in the first round and they replaced an incumbent starter (preferably without injury?)

Offense?

Doug Free, Injury (Colombo). 4th round draft pick.

Can't think of anyone else. What Romo?

Defense?

Alan Ball... Disaster.

Before that? Bradie James? 2003?

Maybe I'm having amnesia... but it just doesn't work out.

Draft players to fit specific needs on the team and draft players who you expect can start now (not if they develop later 2-3 years later). Draft players to replace expensive starters who are treading down in skill level.

Romo earned his gig because of injury and severely outplaying the deposed starter.

Most low picks/UDFA have to scratch to get on the field.

Even Felix and Dez walked in as stud prospects but started out as backups. (This only happened to Dez because of injury I will grant).

In my perfect world:

1st - 3rd round draft picks are expected to start almost immediately. Drafted to fill straight up holes.

4-5th round draft picks should then be drafted in order to eleviate depth positions where veterans are being replaced by said 1st-3rd round draft picks.

Romo's had nothing to do with injury.

Felix SHOULD have started immediately just as Dez should have.

Well the way Bledsoe played he sure looked hurt. lol But yeah he was just ineffective when Romo took over.

So you would not have drafted Aaron Rodgers

Can you say Bobby Carpenter?

That's the problem with Utopian schemes: They require a perfect world to work, and they all work in a perfect world.

Even early first round picks are not givens, many bust out. The percentages go down from there. Even in the more demanding period of the last 10 years, the percentages of 2nd and 3rd round picks becoming immediate starters is not that great.

Though no disagreement with you that that's what you want to see happen.
