Demarcus Lawrence, DE 6-3 #251 gave up to much for this kid he better produce

We could have had

Trent Murphy, DE 6'5

Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB 6 -3 255

Murphy is not a good player. That was one of the bigger reaches of the round.

And Attaochu was not even evaluated as a DE for us.

Demarcus Lawrence graded out as a 1st round player and was the last player on the board we feel could be a plus starter in 2014 at RDE. Puts quite the premium on the player. Supply/demand forces at work.

I just read a write up on Murphy that basically said he is a "college tried hard that won't do well in the pro's".

Please explain to me why we would draft someone like that?

bodi, despite what I said, I can see your reservations about the trade. I'm just saying I'm not as interesting in the specific names you gave. And look what the league thinks of Ealy and Crichton.... we clearly got by far the best pass rusher available to start the day. We should feel great about that.

I was OK with the Martin pick in the 1st, best player available etc.

BUT. We had the worst defense the Cowboys have ever had last year. AND we lost Ware and Hatcher. Our Safety play was a joke last year. We picked up Melton so that negates one DL spot.

So I was OK with Martin, assuming we picked up two contributors on the D, one Safety and a DL, someone who can get after the QB. I think we've solved 2 positions on defense when we HAD to solve 3 to have a chance of improving.

You never know what could happen, but at this point with our next pick in the 4th I don't think anyone can say we should have a better season on defense in the coming season.

Generally speaking, aren't all college players trying hard?

Kind of a odd statement. Never really seen a guy bashed because of his work ethic. Usually they say "high motor", "relentless", and all sort of other stuff like that. Never seen a guy get called a "try hard" though. Sounds like the author is spending too much time conversing with prepubescent Call of Duty players.

I thought the idea was to diminish the opposing QB's time in the pocket?

We could have had a lot of different guys but this is the guy the Cowboys wanted very badly.

From rotoworld....

"Murphy (6-foot-5 3/8, 250) played outside linebacker for the Cardinal, earning second-team All-American accolades in 2013. He finished his career with a whopping 52.5 tackles for loss and 32.5 sacks, good for third most in school history. Murphy clocked 4.86 at the Combine with a 9-foot-10 broad jump. Despite his college stats, Murphy lacks NFL-caliber edge-rush tools. After charting all 15 of Murphy's senior-year sacks, NFL Films' Greg Cosell stated, "only two of them came when he actually beat someone. I don't really think he's a true NFL pass rusher." Ultimately, Murphy is a try-hard college player whose skills may simply struggle to translate."

But I'll let your expertise be the deciding factor bc I realistically do not know much about him
