Why does that math seem off? If you figure that speed through a 40 yard dash, it comes out in the 7's.

I'm not great with math, but I think the analytics department is incorrect. How is a closing speed different from a dash? He was essentially at a stop when Watkins moved laterally.

I can be way off on this. but five yards a second in a forty is 8 seconds.

While your math is correct you're missing the fact that going from a standing start in full pads is going to be a lot slower than firing out of starting blocks in shorts and a t-shirt. What's important to note is that all the other players on the field could NOT cover that same ground in that amount of time.

Not 4 seconds slower.

Ronnie, maybe so. But this is what I found out there on the interwebs.

DeMarvion Overshown runs official 4.56 40-yard dash at 2023 combine. He seems very fast to the eye, to me. But you may be correct.

I don't think the math is accounting for the horizontal movement. It's more like 30-something yards - 14 yards and then the distance from the hash to outside the numbers.

A 2.8 35-yard dash is fast but either way it's a really dumb way to frame his speed lol

My wife looked at me yesterday like I was nuts when I leaped out of my chair after that play! In all the plays yesterday that was the most impressive.
Same thing happened to me too lol
