Ugh...Manassas is a dump. When I was growing up we used to call it Manass......hole.

Baltimore isn't much better. Camden Yards is an awesome venue to catch a baseball game, as long as there is a decent team playing opposite the Orioles, but outside that and the aquarium, I'd never set foot in city limits.

It's unfortunate that you've only visited that part of Virginia. The are some wonderful places in our state.

...then again, I just spent all day driving around NoVa traffic yesterday....and I wasn't real pleased. Meh...we have our bright spots.
Well the real benefit of staying there was being able to drive into Washington (as you can imagine, my appeals to go to Baltimore were rejected.) I guess we were in a more suburban area, so it didn't come across too badly (Manassas that is.) I really want to go again and see some of the Civil War sights in Virginia.

Maybe I have too much free time on my hands these days, but I'm really doing a lot of reading these days (currently reading Homicide by David Simon, which of course is about Baltimore.) But I'd love to find more books about urban history in the U.S. I'm curious to know how about places like Baltimore and Detroit and how they have ended up the way they are. The problem in Canada, is that we only have 3-4 cities that are worth thinking about, and sadly, the historical aspect just isn't that exciting.

As much as I hate to agree with "summerisfunner", I'd have to agree. Boston is a top notch place to visit.:D

If you like The Wire, there's a book that is a collection of NY Times articles about race relations in America. One of the stories is about the creators of Homicide, TV series I think.

Its pretty interesting. Book is called "How Race is Lived in America", I believe. Should check it out.

Yeah I went there a number of times when I was younger. Thought it was beautiful and I can't wait to go again. Really want to visit Chicago as well.

Detroit is the worst city I've been in.

That is my impression of Detroit also. My father is a truck driver and when I would go on the road with him we had to go to Detroit several times to drop off and pick up loads. I hated it. Although we could have been sent to the bad part of town, I don't know. But I don't think it sends a good message to visitors when you have bars on both your windows and doors, on most of your buildings.

Oh, sorry. The ugliest city in the country is El Paso.

Absolutely Horrid.

We only went there once, and weren't there very long, but thought it was ok, but not great.

I spent a weekend there one year, and had a great time. I would like to go back there one day.
