So in Eatmans article above it said that Barber avoided a 25k fine by speaking to the media regarding his injurying. If thats true thats some crap by the league. Why should a player be forced to speak to the mediots if he doesnt want too? Thats crap and the league is getting outta control with its fines especially for something like this with the way the media is willing to trash a player for ratings.

IIRC, starters are required to give an interview at least once a year if media outlets put in a request for an interview with the team and league offices. Something like that. I really can't remember exactly what it is.

Agreed that it is tough when the media can be obnoxious...but this game needs the media and the players are very very lucky to be paid silly money for doing something they love...and the NFL needs the media attention if it is to thrive ...unfortunately Marion has to do his bit...he just has to be smart about it (and he seems to be a fairly private person so it is perhaps tougher for him than say ...Marty B).

It's not like he doesn't want to talk about his injury, Barber just doesn't want to talk at all. Forcing him to talk to the media is pretty low IMO it's clearly something he's not comfortable doing even when he's healthy

The NFL wouldn't be where it is today if not for ESPN and the like. Let's not get it twisted.

That's enter-tain-ment. Right or wrong the league does expect players to be accessible to the media

[Excerpted]

For starters, he avoided a $25,000 fine from the NFL by speaking to the media for the first time since sometime last year. It only lasted two minutes and his answers were short and . . . shorter.

He said he felt good, even stating on Wednesday that, "If I feel good today, I'll be good tomorrow and I'll be good up until Monday."

Then he surprised us all by dressing out for Wednesday's practice, although it was just in a limited role. He continued that all week long, up until Saturday, where he showed a little frustration in the locker room when reporters tried again to get an update on his health. This time, not only did Barber not speak to reporters, but he attempted to move some media members, who were trying to interview another player, from crowding his own space. Barber did so by spraying his can of deodorant at least eight or nine times, aiming it directly at the face of one reporter several times.

Maybe that was funny to him and some teammates, but seemed a little childish to others.

yep, you have to look at both sides of the coin, so to speak
if the media didnt get the stories that some of you want, you would be hollering, where is the news?

so its a double edge sword

now regarding players, anytime your a big time player, then your in the news and that comes with the territory

didnt say it was fair or not, thats just how it is;
like in life you have to take the good with the bad

Well here are the questions (paraphrasing)

So how's the leg?
It's ok
Will it be ok for practice?
yeah should be
Will it be ok Monday, gametime?
Should be, feels ok now
So it feels ok?
yeah
So you think it will be ok Monday?
If it's good now....

I'm going to FedEx Barber a big, old fat aerosol can of Brut. If that doesn't gag media guys who are crowding him too close, nothing will.

Because, it's about money. The more the media talks about the NFL, the more valuable the NFL becomes. They force him to talk, because it gets the NFL in the news. The fans want to know and want to hear Barber talk. The NFL is inclined to make Barber talk because it means cash in their pockets.

When you see how much the networks pays the NFL to cover the sport they expect access to be granted. Players benefit off these big network contracts as well

It's part of the job.

If you don't want to talk to the media, retire and get a job at the Piggly Wiggly.

It's a crappy rule, I agree, but it's not like it's a new one. This requirement has been around for a long time if I remember right.

Take the interview, use words like "no comment" and "I'll take the 5th amendment on that:)"
