What has he proven himself to be? Well lets look at his college career. He shared time with Lawrence Maronie. So in college he proved himself to be a good change of pace back. Then we look at his NFL career where he served as Julius Jones' backup. He did a great job in that role but still only proved himself to be a good change of pace back. He finally gets his chance as the starter and what happened?
Well we lost to a team we beat twice with Jones as the #1. We lost to a rival team. We lost at home! We lost during the playoffs. We lost after a bye week. This to me is not a "proven" HB. I think we can all agree that we were the better team on that day. The only thing that changed was we got Terry Glenn back and the Giants had a ton of injuries. Oh yeah and we made Barber the #1.
So putting Barber in as a #1 is a gamble. Just like drafting McFadden would be a gamble. The only difference is McFadden is much younger and his style of play will give a MUCH longer career. But McFadden is more versatile, He can throw, catch and run the ball. That would give us more options on offense.
The fact is that we are taking as big a risk by keeping Barber at #1 as we would be by drafting a RB. He is not proven as a #1 and with his style of run no one knows how long he will last.
