Barber's conservation plan

June, 2, 2010 Jun 212:05PM ETEmail Print Share By Matt MosleyIRVING, Texas -- In case you haven't bumped into him this offseason, Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber has dropped about 10 pounds and he looks lighter on his feet during organized team activities. And since Barber almost always refuses to speak (or make eye contact) with reporters, we had a good discussion with running backs coach Skip Peete on Tuesday.

Coaches would like Marion Barber to avoid unnecessary risks with his body.In order to prevent injuries that have plagued him the past two seasons, the Cowboys are trying to convince Barber that it's OK to give up on a play from time to time. He's forged his reputation as a back who prefers to punish defenders, but Peete has been showing him video clips of plays where it wasn't worth it to fight for an extra yard.

"We talk to Marion all the time," said Peete following Tuesday's OTA session. "You probably didn't need to take that hit. It would have been smart to get down. You are not going anywhere with one guy on your ankle. Be smart."

"I remember talking to Barry Sanders about why he ran out of bounds when he was close to the sidelines, and he said, 'Why should I take that hit if it was unnecessary?' Peete said. "I feel the same way. You see a guy lower his shoulder to get the extra yard, but why do it if it's not going to benefit the team. It looks good on TV but you chance losing him. What does that do if it's only going to be second-and-7 instead of second-and-8? You didn't need to take that hit. If it's third-and-5, then you drive for the first down. You have to be smart."

It's not often that you hear coaches counseling a player to give up on a play, but in Barber's case, it's probably sound advice.

The minute you start trying to change the way a RB runs, you might as well be cutting him. There might be a few areas where he could change his mindset (ie. about to run out of bounds) but I suspect there are many instances where the instincts will just take over. When you start putting doubt into the instincts you risk ruining the RB.

Honestly, I think Barber would have been better served to bulk up and short yardage back/punisher.

Barber runs better against tired defenders. Duh. That's why he suddenly looks ineffective.

Felix makes fresh guys look like they are running in sand. Start Felix close with Barber. Didn't have to go to Princeton to figure that out.

This feels like a bad idea. Barber is a physical runner and that's the nature of his game. Rather than change his style, they just need to spell him more.

I think Barber is positioned to have a big year.

The problem with casting Barber as the closer -- you lose your best pass blocking RB for the first two-thirds of every game.

Keeping Romo upright is a priority. Barber's ability to pickup the blitz means he's going to see plenty of playing time before the 4th quarter. And he should.

Romo is the key, passing efficiency wins games, and because Barber protects Romo better than the other backs, it isn't wise to limit Barber to a one-dimensional role.

He's more than a closer.

how do you know Felix has not improved in the blosking area

its his third year

Felix is having the big year this year - IMO

I have to say i dont like this.I wish Barber would have went ala Bettis and bulked up . I like a back trying to get that extra yard. Every yard counts. Barber is also a closer back.Period.

The threat of Felix's running will aid Romo more in the passing game than any small difference in Felix's and Barber's blocking ability.

When you have one of the five most explosive players in the league, you have to use them to threaten defenses.

They're not trying to change his style. They just want him to make some better choices with regard to the contact.

I would have rather seen him add 5-10 lbs and play some FB.

That was my thought also !

I've always heard that MBIII was so valuable because he energizes the whole team with his wild barbaric playstyle. Now the coach wants the player to back off of that? Why?

Take away the "Barbarian" part from MBIII and he becomes just an average back at best. Having Marion the Barbarian for half the season is better than having Marion the Librarian for a full season IMO. And if the coaches would cut down his carries and use him as a closer (therefore playing Felix and Choice more often) we could probably have the Barbarian for the whole season.

Coaches are way wrong on this one IMO. They'll have MBIII become a very mediocre RB who will end up being cut next year because "somehow" he will have seem to have lost his spark and energy.
