Yeah, it's the offseason and I'm bored. This should shake things up. Switzer has been underappreciated by Cowboy fans. He brought us a Super Bowl after all. Barry may have done it with Jimmy's players, but he didn't let his ego get in the way and change things when he took over. I have never seen a head coach get less appreciation from a fanbase after winning the Super Bowl. Jerry proved a point by hiring Switzer. If Jerry can love him, why can't we? C'mon show some love for the son of a bootlegger.

I never had a problem with him. He should get credit for being the guy to replace Jimmy, and not having the outcome be an epic fail. Not an easy job.

Plus, he had serious stones to take a pistol with him to the airport!!!:lmao2:

I never had a issue with Barry.

Did some stupid moves like having a gun at a airport.....( I think this is correct )

But overall.....great college coach and came to Dallas with no support from fans and won a SB. His first year we went down early to SF ....turnovers and such. Yet....this game was blamed on Barry......go figure......I guess Players not executing excuse doesnt work with Barry

Irvin loved Barry......thats all I needed to see.

IMHO Barry gets the same treatment as Jerry.

Barry took over a fan favorite and legend coach in Jimmy Genius and Jerry bought a team and fired the legend great Tom Landry

Some fans will never get over that.

Barry gave Jerry the heads-up on Murray. That should get some appreciation.

In that 1994 conference championship game in which the Cowboys fell behind by 21 points in the 1st quarter to the 49ers, they made an impressive, valiant (but ultimately unsuccessful) attempt to come back. Their effort there, one might think, would suggest a well coached team.

I also was always impressed by the fact that Switzer's teams (college or pro) had never lost three games in a row throughout his whole career--until his last month at the Cowboys helm.

He was mostly an embarrassment, though.

I can get behind that.

My only prior appreciation for Barry Switzer, as a part of the Dallas Cowboys, had been when he finally stepped down/ resigned /was fired as head coach and retired from the NFL. I appreciated that. Am I being too harsh? LOL.

"We did it our way, baby! We did it! We did it! We did it!"

I liked him, but he kind of freaked me out in that Bad Lieutenant movie.

this should be a short thread.

I thought it was better than the Dave Campo appreciation thread.

Charles Haley said Switzer was his favorite coach.

Not sure if that was pre or post medication though.

Cause he let him wank during team meetings.

I agree. Barry didn't hire himself.

And what's more, people act like it was so easy to come in and coach as a total outsider without being able to bring anyone with you and keep winning like before. Let's see, we're offering you this great-sounding job, but you'll inherit an entire staff loyal to the last coach, you won't be able to bring any assistants with you, and you have to keep all the systems we already in place.

When's the last time anyone remembers a situation like that?

He had to deal with all the gossiping and politics that you know was going on behind his back among the coaches who were there with Jimmy and no doubt thought they or someone else deserved the job. He had to deal with Jerry and his huge ego wanting to run the front office after Jimmy left. He had to deal with a bunch of players who loved the previous coach and so were immediately distrustful of him. Do people realize how tough that is?

Barry wasn't perfect, but he did about as good a job as could be expected given Jerry's constraints.

Sorry, I think I'm in the wrong place.

Could someone give me directions to the Larry Brown/Neil O'Donnell appreciation thread?

I used to play golf with Barry every year in a coaches clinic that he attended. All the coaches would break off for a day of golf at the club where I was a pro. We hit it off pretty well the fist year and I played 4 more rounds with him after that. I loved talking with him for 18 holes and he knew as much about sports in general as anybody I've ever met. It didn't matter if it was boxing, soccer, or women's lacrosse, the dude knew it and knew it well. He was unbelievably proud of his time at both OU and in Dallas and glowed when he talked about both. I know he inherited his Super Bowl team and I'm sure he did too, but it doesn't change the fact that he loved being a Cowboy.
