The Texans will not renew the contracts of head athletic trainer Kevin Bastin and strength and conditioning coach Dan Riley, the team announced Tuesday.
General manager Rick Smith thanked both men for their contributions to the team.
“We decided to go in a different direction, but we want to thank them both for their years of service to the Texans and wish them both the best in their future endeavors,” Smith said.
Bastin finished his eighth year with the Texans this season and spent the previous 12 seasons as the assistant athletic trainer for the Washington Commanders.
Riley joined the Texans in 2001 and finished his 27th year as a strength coach in the NFL this year. Prior to Houston, Riley worked in the same capacity with the Washington Commanders for 19 seasons.

It's my understanding that these two guys were let go in a "throw out the baby with the bathwater" scenario down in Houston. Maybe Woody's Girl can shed some light on them. I have heard in the past that our players really like the strength coach we have now. Far be it from me to say we need a change, but it sure seemed to me that we just wore down later in the season. I think we should be willing to look at all possibilities for improving this team.
I know a previous thread talked about 'game management' as a possible area of improvement. Successful game management demands superb conditioning. I didn't see it this year,or haven't in a few years.
