The Texans will not renew the contracts of head athletic trainer Kevin Bastin and strength and conditioning coach Dan Riley, the team announced Tuesday.

General manager Rick Smith thanked both men for their contributions to the team.

“We decided to go in a different direction, but we want to thank them both for their years of service to the Texans and wish them both the best in their future endeavors,” Smith said.

Bastin finished his eighth year with the Texans this season and spent the previous 12 seasons as the assistant athletic trainer for the Washington Commanders.

Riley joined the Texans in 2001 and finished his 27th year as a strength coach in the NFL this year. Prior to Houston, Riley worked in the same capacity with the Washington Commanders for 19 seasons.

It's my understanding that these two guys were let go in a "throw out the baby with the bathwater" scenario down in Houston. Maybe Woody's Girl can shed some light on them. I have heard in the past that our players really like the strength coach we have now. Far be it from me to say we need a change, but it sure seemed to me that we just wore down later in the season. I think we should be willing to look at all possibilities for improving this team.
I know a previous thread talked about 'game management' as a possible area of improvement. Successful game management demands superb conditioning. I didn't see it this year,or haven't in a few years.

I have often said that the one constant over many years has been Jerry Jones.

However the strength and conditioning coach has also been here with different coaches, players and schemes.

So I guess it is fair to wonder about him.

However here is the deal IMO.

Each coach has different ideas of what they want from a strength and conditioning program. This guy just follows what the coaches want.

For instance, when Tuna came in he wanted some things done differently in the program compared to what was ran before. So the guy altered it to fit Tuna's way. If some recall this caused some problems with Larry Allen as he was used to doing things differently.

So in that aspect I don't know if it is the coaches fault as he seems to be following whatever the HC wants in the strength and conditioning program.

Sounds logical,Brain. However,I wouldn't be adverse to seeing what either one of these guys,or both, have to offer. I'm not one who promotes 'change for change sake', but I think we do ourselves a disservice if we don't at least explore what these men bring to the table. That goes with any available coaches,OR PLAYERS,out there that we have a reasonable chance of bringing on board. Good thoughts, though!

How did we lose him? Do you recall? Which coach fired him, allowing him to go to NE?

Are you hinting that if we got rid of Mike,we would be doing the same thing,i.e.'throwing the baby......'? Don't have anything against Mike. What I'm saying is that the strengths he brings don't seem to be translating to the field lately. Am I wrong on that,Hos? Did you see a superbly conditioned team out there this year? Maybe all it will take is for Mike to 'tweak' his philosophies or practices and all will be well.

After what we've seen the last few years, let no stone go unturned!
(I know,I know...We're dealing with Jerry!)

See-My mistake...I didn't even realize Mike was gone...Has been for some time....Sorta shows, besides my stupidity, that the conditioning part of the team training has been rather unremarkable since he left. My bad....But the thought remains.

Juraszic is almost universally praised, including by Parcells who is a S&C fanatic. (One of his best qualities, by the way.)

But if we made a change there, we wouldn't want Riley. He has this this goofy philosophy of very slow lifting -- more like bodybuilding training than athletic lifting. That line of thought gained popularity maybe 15, 20 years ago, but nobody trains athletes like that anymore... And for good reason.

I'm not sure, but after he left here he went to the Saints and they didn't do anything of note.

I don't think Joe Juraszic is the issue with this team even though he arrived in 1997 and we have not won in December or January since 1997. Maybe that's naive of me. I don't know.

maybe they don't do enough endurance training, or maybe not practicing in pads with full contact, they're in shape but not football shape. You play like you practice?

Joe Juraszek was my trainer at Tech and he is very, very good.

We often had guys vomiting during workouts.

He is not some pushover trainer by any means. BP liked him for a reason. He focuses on basic strength movements(squats, deadlifts et al), flexibility and conditioning.

Was it VA Tech, Texas Tech, LA Tech? Just curious as to when you were there...
