Battle at Little Big Jerry: Cowboys vs. Philadelphia
By Jason Henry
January 1st, 2010
Queue the classic NFL Films music with the dudes jogging down the sideline with white “smoke” billowing from their mouths. Some kind of way a camera is juxtaposed into the Cowboys huddle before the game starts and you see the team getting fired up by the now legendary Keith Brooking.
The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles match-up Sunday evening is a game only built for Cuban linx, word to Raekwon the Chef.
Phila leaves Dallas with a W then they can officially call themselves NFC East champs and holder of the now coveted number 2 seed in the NFC playoff race. The Cowboys face a tougher road, not as rough as last season’s, but a difficult one to the second seed. Dallas needs some help son.
First they have to beat the Eagles in Big D, which is an accomplishment in itself because that would mean that Dallas would sweep Phila. Second they need for the Cardinals and Vikings to lose, which isn’t un-likely if you’ve seen the way these two squads have played lately.
Either way it goes, the ‘Boys cannot lose their playoff spot if they drop a game against Philly.
But this game is worth a little more to both teams. The color of hate will be spread across Cowboys and Eagles jerseys Sunday evening as they fight for bragging rights. Maybe Dallas has a little green hulk anger because of the embarrassing 44-6 thrashing they were handed last season by the Eagles.
If they are able to remember that ruthless Cooley High style beating they received from Philadelphia last year, then this game should be a breeze for the ‘Boys from Valley Ranch.
The Eagles enter this game with as many weapons as the U.S. military with Desean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, LaSean McCoy, Brent Celek, and Donovan McNabb. In the first half of ballgames the Eagles are blowing teams out 273 to 145. That’s a 128 point difference in the first half alone!
The Cowboys have to match the Eagles intensity at the start or they could find themselves in a hole that they can’t climb out of, just ask the Denver Broncos.
One good thing going for Dallas is the fact that Philly loses steam in the second half and usually needs another Viagra pill to get them going again.
Once the 3rd and 4th quarters start the Eagles tend to get a little lax and that’s usually when teams make their moves.
Compared to the first half of games, the Eagles have scored 117 less points in the 3rd and 4th quarter of ballgames.
Thing is, the Cowboys can’t afford to wait that long. But what’s great about Dallas is their play as of late, starting with the game against San Diego, has consistently improved. They beat San Diego in almost all important factors of the ball game, including total yards and first downs. Tony Romo and the crew were finally able to put it all together against New Orleans as they beat the previously un-beaten Saints 24-17.
Forget what ya heard about the Commanders, going to play a night game at FedEx field in D.C. against your fiercest rival is not an easy task. The Cowboys defense pitched a shut out and their offense put up 17 points sending Dallas to its 10th win of the season.
This, my blue and silver brethren, is a changed Dallas Cowboys team. Tony Romo has thrown one interception in the month of December, Marion Barber has rediscovered his love of the end zone, and Miles Austin is doing his best Terrell Owens impression.
If this team continues its urgent and inspired play against Philadelphia and on into the playoffs, we could very well see Wade Phillips standing on the sideline in Miami. And it wouldn’t be because he’s the guest of the Sean Peyton or Brad Childress.
